Since my son just drove away in the Impreza to his new apartment my ride share has flown the coop. I'm just starting to cross shop these 2 vehicles. My first impression is you get more for your money in the Silverado with 4.8L versus an STX trim with 3.7 (gee, no carpet in a $35,000 vehicle!). Both have about the same horsepower, but 6 speed in Ford and 4 speed in Chevy. I'm assuming a bit better mileage with V6/6speed combination. This is primarily a suburban DIY vehicle for runs to the lumber yard or garden nursery or other general use, but I'd also like it to be comfortable and economic enough for 600-700 mile trips a couple of times a year. I'd appreciate any comments, good or bad, on either vehicle. Thanks.

No one can bad mouth Ford. Their trucks are beautiful.

That said, I prefer the GM. Trans issues are well sorted out and their trucks weigh significantly less than some Fords I've seen.

No V6 for me in a real truck!

Yeah, it has to have an inline 6 to make it a real truck! :p

I would second the notion to lean toward the GM. Their powertrains are proven solid and I don't feel like the Ford is competitive with their lower trim trucks. We have an F-150 at work, and I don't think it makes a very good impression. The plastics are very low grade and there is little sound insulation. Comparing it to the Chevy 1500 we also have, the Chevy is much more polished, in and out. Both are work grade trims, but the GM carries much more refinement and seemingly a stiffer frame as well. The F-150 rides rather jiggly.

Despite Ford's excellent Ecoboost engine, my money would be on the GM.

Edit: I see this is the 3.7L and not the 3.5L. I definitely recommend the GM in this case.

I just went to ford's website and made a STX 4x4 extended cab with the awesome 5.0 V8 for $33,685...you might want to look at a different dealer or order one customized for yourself. The Ford like you said has the 6 speed A/T, which in my mind is an advantage. I like the new Ford trucks and their new engine line up is state of the art over the previous generation.

Oh, man... Did you bring back a BAD memory...

My ex-FIL worked at Ford and back in the mid 90's, I bought a NEW F-150. I wanted a V8, but he said the Inline 6 was strong enough with "highway gears" too. So, I foolishly took his advice...

WHAT A DOG!!!

Stay away from a 6 cyl in a full size truck.

300 I6=beast. we used to have a 73 Ford pickup with the 300, and it was a torque monster! but, yeah i guess you got like 3.08 or 2.73s lol, then its not too good

I like the F150, but I think Ford is pricing itself out of the market. You can get the Silverado LS 2WD Ext Cab V8 for $21,000-22,000. GM has $4500 Customer incentive that will expire on September 06. There is no reason to pay $10,000-$15000 more to gain maybe 2 mpg.

My FIL paid 29770.00 for his 2011 F150 ECSB 2wd XLT with the Ecoboost. We paid 28500.00 for our 07 CCSB 2wd 5.4 XLT.

I work on all major truck brands and they all have issues, but I take my battle with ford. The 5.0 has lots of power and the ford transmission is unbeatable in these trucks. Go drive them all before you decide based on price. Fords are heavier for a reason the payload is also more. Buy a car if you want a V6.

FWIW the Inline 300 is by far one of the longest lasting engines EVER built. Much like cummins its a proven fact that inlines routinly have longer longevity.

Go shopping you can get a great deal now on 2011 or wait until mid oct when new model year is introduced for the best deals

Its seems it is easier to get the 5.3 with the 6 speed on a gmc serria than a silverado. So it may be worth looking at those.

That's because you need a 5-speed manual and know when to shift with that motor. It has plenty of torque and OK hp. Drove a 4x4 300 I6 F150 and it was plenty.

Recommendation:

I just got a new 2011 Ranger SuperCab 4cyl + 5-speed manual 2WD. If you don't need a big truck, these get 26-30 mpg, aren't slow anymore, 6' bed, handle a lot better, and are easy to park. I paid $16,100 for mine and it has carpet! (XLT).

I'd shop the 5.0L ford instead of the V6. As many above have said, you should be able to get into a well-trimmed truck with that engine for less than the price you mentioned in your post.

We have one at work, and it is very nice.

More importantly in all of this, what are the dealers quoting you?

Another option might be a dealer demo unit... one that a salesman and customers drove, that only has a few thousand miles on it.

Window sticker prices are pretty much useless anymore.

I think you can't go wrong with either. Test drive both, pick the one that you like driving better. If that doesn't make up your mind, pick the better deal. You're getting a truck that should last decades either way.

$35K seems high for a V6 STX...that's more like V8 XLT pricing. Look at the buy it now prices some dealers have for 2011s on eBays...you can probably get all the options you want for under $30K.

Both are good trucks just get whatever one you like more and can get a better deal on.

There is nothing wrong with a V6 in a truck, more so these days since the 6's make more power than the 8's did a few years ago.

Considering gas isn't going to get cheaper I would only buy a truck that you are OK filling up when it gets expensive, and loaded big V8 powered 4wd trucks get worse mileage than 2wd V6 models, so buy accordingly.

Cause 13mpg sucks when gas goes over $5 a gallon.

Other than to continue to remind me how foolish it is to spend this amount of money on a depreciating pile of nuts and bolts. I bought my first F150 in 1976 and when I traded my Tundra in 2008 I swore I wouldn't get another until they got 30 MPG. I'm tired of waiting for the small fuel efficient diesels in a 1/2T.

I'd go with a GM with the 4.8 V-8. You just seem to get more truck for less money with GM.

GM is still in a relatively 'weaker' postition than Ford, so probably easier to push through a deal with a GM/Chev dealer looking to clear out a left-over 2011.
