I think it's a good thing, you either love it or hate it, but at least people talk about it. When was the last time Toyota's designs generated any discussion at all?
+1 Like it or not, the design is fresh. Corolla looks have gotten long in the tooth. The Civic was a new looking design when the latest gen was introduced but delaying the total redesign a year till 2012 should help this Elantra get off to a good start. And for those not wanting turbo and/or DI, the Elantra fills the bill with multi port FI. The fender flairs remind me some of the Mazda6.

Every new car they introduce shows Hyundai is on the move for sure. They are generating a lot of positive buzz.

FYI, new Elantra is based on i30 platform, same as the current Elantra Touring, so, in essence, it just catching up. Touring could use new sheetmetal, but I like it anyway.
 
Was told by a HYUNDAI sales person that the 2011 ELANTRA now has a timing chain . Is this correct ?

I have had a totally different experience--wife has a 2006 Azera Limited and daughter has a 2006 Elantra. Neither of them have had a wrench on the engine except for oil changes and neither of them are 'falling apart'. At the time when I bought the Elantra there was no other car in the same price point that had as many features or had a warranty that was as good. My daughter is not exactly easy on cars and hers is in great shape and running condition. I would not hesitate to buy Hyundai again.

My wife's 2003 Elantra, now slightly over 160k miles, has NEVER had a repair. Only regular maintenance items, and still drives excellent, without a single squeak/rattle. Nowhere near a throw away car. And dealer service has been very good.

I'm not going to speak on Hyundai in a broad sense since I have limited experience but a friend has not had much luck with their 2003 Sonata in terms of getting warranty work covered or longevity. At just shy of 100k the car is falling apart and apparently burns about 3 qts in a 3000 mile oil change. In a general sense, the car is "used up".

To me it is Hyundais resistance to covering warranty items that I found most concerning and keeps me from looking at them.

My wife's 2003 Elantra, now slightly over 160k miles, has NEVER had a repair. Only regular maintenance items, and still drives excellent, without a single squeak/rattle. Nowhere near a throw away car. And dealer service has been very good.


I believe he is talking about the Kia Soul vehicle.

I shall not waiver: Hyundai service up here along the coast is the worst imaginable. They will absolutely ruin your car. I love the home team mentality on BITOG - Dont attack my purchase choice! ... Or Else!

Personally, I'm impressed by the specs. I'm not a fan of the new "fluidic sculpture design language" on the Sonata and the Elantra (interior or exterior) but when I see:

- 6 speed manual trans
- 1.8 liter engine that manages to beat my Civic's by 8 hp and almost 10 ft*lbs.
- EPA ratings that are close to the 2007 old EPA ratings for my Civic.

I'm impressed. OK, the FE ratings may be a product of gearing and the car's responsiveness may suffer, I don't know. But compared to Kia/Hyundai's previous 4 cylinder engines this one looks like much more of a contender in terms of power and efficiency.

I've consistently been pleasantly surprised by the specs on new Hyundais and this continues that trend.

Arco, have ever had a car that did NOT have some kind of a major problem? IIRC, you broke a brand new car on the way from dealership. Was it the same one you used lawnmower oil in?
I do not think Hyundai is to blame for the car problems you've had.
 
We had the pre-cats fail on my mother-in-law's Hyundai XG. A $1500 repair.

I personally think that the failure was the direct result of her 1/2 mile trips to the grocery store once week or so over the course of several years. The catalytic converters never got up to operating temperature and the engine never got up to a sufficient temperature to get out of an enriched cold start state.

Plus, she is 76. She doesn't exactly accelerate in a brisk manner. Putt putt putt putt to the store. An hour later, putt putt putt back home. She still drives safely but at speeds that might annoy even a hyper-miler.

All of that combined would have probably done the same to any car. Would have clogged a carbureted car up with carbon outright.

That is the only problem it has ever had. (knock wood).

I'm not displeased with Hyundai's quality. And it doesn't hurt that it has decent quality leather and good interior materials.

The service personnel were okay. I don't typically have a lot of nice things to say about dealer techs. They can be some of the least logical problem solvers in the automotive universe. You have a non-factory item on the car? That's automatically the problem....even if the problem is completely unrelated and a documented problem on cars of that type. The Hyundai techs and service writers were average. No better than most, no worse.

Well, I guess I won't be looking at the Elantra Touring, unless it's the current model: LINK

That's a real bummer, since I liked the fact that Hyundai was making a car that no one else was willing to make. Now, it's another Mazda3/Matrix clone for 2013...

It looks like Volvo are the only ones left with a small wagon.

Sigh - I hate revisiting these painfull moments. I Brought the sonata in for MT tranny fluid change they put the WRONG spec fluid in and the car wouldnt shift properly, they stated there was a TSB to repair the trans, I said "it was fine before YOU changed the oil" they said they couldnt give it back to me without "rebuilding the trans", they ruined the trans and didnt even bolt the tailshaft bracket to the subframe (two bolts; one long, one short - they put the short bolt in the long position and "lost' the long bolt) Found this out by driving away and having the drive train promptly hit the hood. And it went down hill from there. I can give you a similar story about a VW fox that required a "crank kit" a week after I picked it up and what they messed up. Fitzgerald-Hicks Dodge/VW at the time. Now under new ownership as Rockingham Motors Nissan/Toyota + Honda. BTW the Yaris ran GREAT on the snowthrower oil - which is a high-spec lightweight psuedo "HDEO" semi-syn with SH level EP adds. API SH. I Know the snowthrower and tractor pictures on the bottle can throw you off. The Shell SM was OK in warm weather but seems to be having trouble with the 20 deg stuff this week.
