you know, i like the very handsome look of the 2010 10th Generation Corolla best.... but the interior is terrible and I hear that it's not a very good car over-all... cheap... and just very average.

Elantra >> Corolla, but not because of the looks

That reminds me of my old 1999 Elantra styling-wise. But, torsion-beam rear suspension?!? My 1999 had IRS and was quite the little ball of fun on a twisty road with a fairly short-geared manual transmission.

Now get that engine or a DI equivalent along with a manual with shorter gears 1-4 and the same 5-6 into the i30 wagon, and we'll talk.

I'm generally not a fan of headlights wrapping around to the A-pillar. But they pulled it off, with that hood wrinkle to segregate it, IMO. And it looks good in white. Tail lights/trunk look like style over substance though.

And OMG, the thing surrounding the nav system looks like a... va... va... I can't say it.

That screen and electronic gadgetry will not last. Failed pixels/screen will render lots useless unless you want to pay big $$$ for NOS parts. Despite longevity improvements, mfrs are building in a replacement cycle via electronic systems that have no business in cars of these price ranges.

I guess Hyundai is trying to move away from Toyota's lack of style, and trying to generate some emotion from their cars.

I think it's a good thing, you either love it or hate it, but at least people talk about it. When was the last time Toyota's designs generated any discussion at all?

I owned an Elantra in 2001. Terrible car.. worst car I've ever experienced. They can inject all the style they want in it, I'll never buy another one. I'll take my 2010 Corolla any day over the Elantra... factor in resale and you might as well smack yourself into a brick wall and burn some fresh $1000 bills in the fireplace.

The problem I've always had with the Elantra is that it is a boring car.

I have the same issue with the Corolla though. The Corolla's shifter is better than the Elantra's but otherwise it seems to be just a people mover.

I would rather have an old 2T/3TC powered Corolla. It was far more interesting and fun to drive for me personally.

I will say that I am going to give the Elantra a second look based on that pic. I don't expect much - but hopefully they fixed some of the vagueness in the shifter and tightened up the suspension a bit.

I saw one at the dealer yesterday and I have to say it looks better in person. I didn't like what I saw in the pics, especially the front.

I also liked the sticker showing the assembly plant as being in Montgomery, AL, now.

Then add in our HUGE trade imbalance with s. Korea. Never owned one that wasnt a complete throwaway car. Have owned: Accent, Elantra and Sonata - all 5M. DeALER SEVICE IS A ABSOLUTRE jOKE - MAKES gm SERVICE SEEM WELCOMING AND WONDERFULL. tOO bad I am attacted to the SOUL (SEOL?) for functionality. My accent got 28MPG where my Yaris gets 35-40MPG.

I have a 2010 Elantra (Sport Tuned Model) with the Beta II 4 cylinder DOHC and 4 - speed automatic transmission w/o GPS or Bluetooth. Yes , the Elantra may be boring to some , but it is also much improved reliability wise and made a couple of "best buy" lists over Civic (the Elantra's only real competition) with a far less sticker price. As for cabin space the 2010 Elantra is classified as a mid - size car while Civic is not . Time will tell if the 2011 Elantra is a step up from the previous Elantra or if it can over take the Civic . I'm not much of a fan for first year drive trains hence why the 2010 model appeals more to me . From an appearance standpoint , I like the 2010 version better - that back window of the 2011 may be hard to see out of . Ditto for the front and rear lights - I like the 2010 version better as they are physically larger and I believe easier to see.

IRS doesnt do anything for a FWD car in this segment. No unsprung weight savings to speak of and "cheap" irs come with constant alignment woes and added complexity for ??
I hate rear IRS in ecobuckets. Twist-beam rears are fine. Now I wish they'd get rid of garbage Mac struts - now THERE is a big BIG BIG steering and handling cost compromise.

I will agree that the current civic has lost its way. Big, heavy and not too accomodating. Lay-down driving position, LESS room than previous with much increased weight. I was given a ride in a new one (4 door) and iIhad NO place to put my feet or toes - the floor pan was angled incorrectly and the heater and dash was hanging down where your footsies belong. Honda can keep it. ...

There is apparently such a thing as "too far" in terms of styling, at least in my opinion after looking at the new Elantra.

It certainly gets noticed. If I'm running 80 down the road in my beige Camry and this guy's running 80 down the road in his new look-at-me styling, one of us is going to get the speeding ticket. And it won't be me.

Different strokes for different folks. Staying off center stage isn't always bad. I don't need to be noticed on the road.

I still like the XD styling better. Perh. I am old fashioned, but I think the XD with a tint, and tastefully upgraded 16" wheels looks terrific and has a more serious look. Simple, straightforward dash, too. Only thing wife needed was a stereo with an AUX Jack, and that was a simple enough "mod". And the car itself has been solid as a rock so far, > 150k miles. Oh, And EXCELLENT visibility all around.

This new style is WAY too curvy for my tastes, and the interior is gimmicky - but seeing how good the Elantra has been doing, this will sell, and that makes me happy - Hyundai is really playing with the big dogs now, and maybe even winning.

Well, since everyone seems to hate it, I'll say that I dig it, both the exterior and particularly the interior.

If they made it into a wagon, I'd look at it. As it stands, the Elantra Touring seems like it could use a re-fresh...
