4.8 vortec, 41,000 miles, typically driven a minimum of 50 miles one way 100 mile round trip, back and forth to college ( friends truck)oil gets to operating temp 5 days a week. would Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 and a mobil EP filter be good for down to 20% on the OLM without a used oil analysis?

Any quality name brand oil and filter would be fine down to 0% of the OLM.

Why stop at 20%, under that type of usage?

Any name-brand 5w30 synthetic oil and a extended performance oil filter. Run it down to 5% OLM or 12 months. I would not go to 0%, it might void warranty.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and a Mobil 1 oil filter is perfect.

Under those driving conditions I think Mobil's EP line could go double the mileage on the oil life monitor. Do a couple of uoa to confirm the maintenance plan and enjoy a long reliable life from that truck.

I wouldn't do a used oil analysis unless there was coolant loss or you suspect excess fuel is in the oil. Yes, Mobil 1 5w30 or 10w30 will give very good long OCIs. 10K is easy and 15K if you use the EP. Consider the warranty.

Huh? Is the truck going to tell someone?

GM owner's manual states that you can go up to two tankfuls of gas past notification to change oil... and on a 26 gallon tank, that can be in excess of yet another 500 miles.

Don't give them any ideas. The way things are going, soon when the OLM hits zero it will automatically kill the engine and OnStar will call you a tow truck (at your expense of course) to bring your truck to the nearest dealer for an oil change. Then they will notify you that you have voided your warranty.

We run a fleet of GM V8's.

The recipe for virtually unlimited engine life is simple. Buy whatever cheap synthetic is on sale, get a decent filter, and follow the OLM. I have had some trucks go 14k miles and others trip it at 4400 depending on the duty cycle. Engine life is almost always 250k miles minimum, with a 400k mile 6.0 liter still working every day!

With the V8 engines the OLM is calibrated very well and can save you a lot of money over the lifetime of the truck.
