I have a buddy that owns a '10 Forester. It has the consumption issue ( weak oil rings) and he is constantly adding oil, 5w30 is the spec. Would switching to say a 10w30 HDEO help with consumption. And I know that there is some kind of Class action lawsuit with Subaru about this and he should bring it to the dealer and raise h3ll, but he's stubborn and just keeps adding oil. I think its causing driveabilty issues as he says that sometimes it gets running so rough that it feels like its only running on 2 cylinders. I think he is actually oil fouling the plugs, we havent had time to pull them and check. So is there any kind of bandaid for this issue or are we fighting a losing battle.

2010 had the old engine.
2011 started with the fb25
so totally off base there.

there is obviously something wrong but not related to any of the oil burning issues in 2011+
Changing oil will not help it needs to be mechanically repaired.

Ok, I think it was a late 2010 model. Ill have to check the vin and find out what engine its got.

Its got an EJ253. They had some built with improperly machined valve guide bore in the head. Ours was an oil eater. Traded it with 60K miles. Ours was an 09.

BTW that engine likes closer to a 40 grade. Also, DO NOT OVERFILL! Also check PCV it can be aggressive. They allways use a qt or 2 through an OCI.

Was it tuned up? Throw out those NGK and put in the denso. and check for loose plugs and leaky spark plug tunnel seals.

I have used BG EPR - On an 2.0 Audi with know ring/oil drinking issues -
It reduced the consumption more than half.

I would suggest a piston ring soak - but this is impossible with a H engine.

Good luck - poor ring seal is really garbage engine design. Audi and Subaru know better.
At least Audi Canada-USA eventually issued a recall.
Sadly it was after we sold it.

What specifically does "constantly adding oil" mean? How many quarts does it consume per 1000 miles?

uh he carries a case of oil with him and adds oil with every tank of gas. not sure how much, but when he starts it has a cloud of blue smoke behind it.

Different oil wont help much. Doing nothing wont help much. Sell it while it still has some residual value. Good luck.

No relevance to the OP as the "poor ring design" otherwise known as the search for MPG due to government regulations.. started with 2011 model and fb25 engine.
OP's friend's car has the ej series engine.

Are all the manufacturers on schedule for 54.5mpg by 2025?
going to be more painful MPG driven changes ahead.
