Hey first post.Been lurking this sight for over a year. Nice website. I have a 3800 engine and observed the same thing as the O.P. poster as far as the valve area is concernd.

My car has 167k miles. I got it wth 108k on the clock. The oil was 3qts low and it had a fram filter

and was at least 2k overdue according to the jiffy lube sticker. Low oil pressure light was flickering on turns and stops. When I change the oil it was very black.

Since then I have been doing 3.5k to 5k oil changes with Pennzoil Conventional progressing to longer oil changes. Castrol Edge in the crankcase now with 1qt of Supertech. Will stick with dino this car runs the same and burns the same conventional or synthetic., 1qt per 2.2k

Now im using the OLM. Car is a 95' it's an early version so the max interval is 7.5k. I'm confident it works. This winter I let it go the whole interval without resetting. It went off at 4,354 miles. Trips mostly 7 miles one way and one of the coldest winters on record for my area. The oil change before was 5k and the OLM light had not come on yet and this was during summer months.

Here are pics at 143k miles when I put a new oil pan gasket on. Can't see in pics but the cross hatch marks were still on the cylider walls.

Here are pics of the lifter valley area. Not as happy but it seems that most 3800's I see at the junkyard look the same in this area.

Balance shaft has some sludge. Don't know it this is a result of the intake manifold leak or by the design that deposits accumulate the balance shaft.

Mostly varnish everywhere else it the lifter valley area.

Buick Century engine.

Yes, 3300 was from 89-93. It was used in a variety of cars. Buick Skylark Grand Sport, Achieva, Grand Am, Cutlass Ciera, Century to name a few.

The 3300 was also a great engine. My uncle had a '91 Century that went to the scrapper due to subframe/floor rust. That thing was more rust than steel, but ran like a top. I think it had almost 300k on it when the rust gods showed up.
