2009 Sonata Inline I-4 DOHC

I recently got a 2009 Sonata, and I was wondering would it be safe and wise to start using a 0w-20? I live in NC, where our winter's are moderate and our summer's are usually around 80-90 degrees. The car has 50,xxx miles on it and I drive 100 miles a day on the highway with around 20 miles in the city. (The highway should be changing to 50 miles when I move closer at the end of the month). Hyundai recommends 5W-20/5W-30, with their 2.4L I-4 engine.

So I was wondering what the pro's and con's of using 0w-20 would be with this engine? I can get Mobil 1 0w-20 kind of cheap thanks to a friend, so I was wondering if it would be wise to switch.

5w-20, 5w-30 - 5w-20 isn't going to hurt it as long as you don't beat on it. You're not going to notice any better gas mileage, though. If you can get 0w-20 Mobil cheaper than you can get other quality oils on sale then go for it.

The only thing I don't like about the 0w20 in that engine is the higher NOACK volatility 0w20's tend to have. We don't know the NOACK of M1 but it is most likely around the same of other good oils. I would stick with 5w20 or 5w30, it doesn't get cold enough in your area to really warrant 0w. I am sure others will disagree, DI engines need low NOACK oils. Valvoline Synpower is the lowest that reports.

If you mean the car, I paid $9k with an extended warranty through the dealership till 100k miles.

I was waiting for a Limited V-6 model, but jumped on this because of the price.

The 09 is not a DI engine so the NOAK wont matter as much...thats a good deal for that car I have the same one only I bought mine last year with 28k on it for 13,900 ironically I can sell it for that now according to KBB and it has 51k miles now...go figure but congrats on the deal.

Hyundai recommends 5W-20 and 5W-30 because they are conventional oils, while 0W20 is mostly synthetic oil.

Of the two 0W20 and 5W20 I would pick 0W20 mainly because of higher VI. If you can get M1 0W20 easily and cheaply I don't see any reason not using it in the Sonata.

Since its not DI I'd use ANY 5w-20/30 and get on with it. Since you have the extended warranty FOLLOW it for OCI.

But looking at how you drive (both in trip type and length) I'd say 5-7k OCI would be safe AFTER the warranty runs its course.

Your engine is a good one and easy on the oil (even though it has a chain) so ANY API SM 5w-20/30 is going to work just fine in NC.

Did you read the manual and what it says to use? You say that Hyundai recommends 5w-20 and 30 in that engine, but is there a temperature chart? If they restrict the 20wt above some tempratures, then that is good info. That said, we are heading into the fall, so I doubt that high-temperature in NC will be a big issue.

So stick with the 5w-20 instead of the 0w-20? I do have a quick question through, would 0w-20 possibly screw up the engine or is it just better to stick to 5w-20 for the warranty.

The 0w-20 is not going to do ANYTHING for your engine that 5w-20/30 oil would do. Follow the manual and your extended warranty papers. That is going to dictate what you do for the next 40,000+ miles.

I'm familiar with that motor and ANY API SM/SN rated 5w-20/30 will be perfect for it. Keep good records and receipts just in case.

If your engine specs 20 Wt oil then M1 0-20 would be an excellant choice. I am doing 10K OCIs with the 0-20 and the oil still looks great.
