FWIW, I have a '06 Tribute V6 and have had zero problems (30K so far) One advantage to the Escape/Tribute/Mariner is parts availability and price vs. imports. Ford shares lots of parts across their lineup and stuff like brake pads rotors etc. are pretty reasonable.

Also have him look at the Mercury Mariner or Tribute. They are essentially the same truck with slightly different styling/interiors.

Which trim of Escape is he leaning towards? He might want to also cross-shop with the Mariner. Typically, you get more in the Mariner for very little additional $. On the downside, the Mariner might be slighly more "girly".

we own an 08 escape hybrid. terrific car. 32 mpg hwy, 37+ around town. consumes no oil at 10,000 interval (Pennzoil Platinum 5w20). drives well, good ergonomics, feels solid, great radio, headlamps, dash lighting. switchgear feels solid, seats are comfy. wife's favorite car ever. she made a good choice.
