Back in Arizona. Finally
OK, so this is the wifes new Tahoe we're talking about.

I changed the FF at 2k with M1, did not reset the OLM and just let 'er roll. The car has been to AZ twice and used for transportation to / from work and today I changed the oil to PP (which I like, mostly because it is a Sopus product).

The OLM still indicated 19 per cent oil life left @ 9800 miles!! If I hadn't changed the FF, the original oil would be still in the engine for 9800 miles. Hmmmmm....

I changed the oil to Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and used an A/C oil filter and reset the OLM.

For all intents and purposes, the OLM is going to want to go to nearly 10k miles before indicating it's time to change the oil. Is the Pennzoil Platinum up to that? Any input appreciated. Cheers!

If the engine sees few cold starts, lots of highway driving at steady state, and you don't lean on it too hard (the OLM is calibrated based on operating temperature and fuel consumption) it will let you run long on your oil.

Actually it's mostly based on additive depletion with oil temperature, cold starts, etc as modifiers.

Sigh ... another brand new vehicle sentenced to a life of long OCI's and varnish.

10K sounds about right- that used to be the OCI with an Impala I had for a awile. Saw only highway driving and 10K oil changes. I did them at 5K though.
FWIW my wife's 04 Tahoe gets it's oil changed before each trip to FL. After the round trip, it indicates 80% oil life left, for 2500 miles of driving. That works out ot over 10K oil changes. No thanks, 5K is fine on PP/PP

The OLM is set up for conventional-the Pennzoil Platinum you put in should be up to 10k and then some. I personally wouldn't run the conventional to 10k, no matter what my driving conditions were, but would be very comfortable with the PP. I would still confirm with a used oil analysis to make sure air filtration, fuel dilution, etc were fine, but that's me.

I say PP+OLM+an occasional used oil analysis=sleep easy+maximize life/efficiency of your investment!

You can make this assertion since you have more training and education in this field than do the GM engineers that designed and tested the OLM, of course.

5k on PP is a waste of oil IMO. Regular Pennzoil would hold up just fine with that driving.

Thanks for the input guys!!!

GM has this vehicle geared to the point of 80 mph = 1800 rpm. In a passing situation it may knock out 4000 rpm but this is probably .0001 per cent of the time.

PP is so cheap, I'm thinking I'll go to a 5k oci just to make sure the engine is the last thing to go in the car's old age. Cheers!!!
