To anyone who has possibly seen this.....I freaked out the first time I saw this, and spoke with some other people who have seen this...I pulled my dipstick the other day at the gas station while filling up and just about screamed as I burned my hand, and also found smoke coming from my dipstick tube,..and deposits built up on the dipstick where the two halves are riveted together. I first thought that I was overheating (I was running the truck hard).....but what I found out was when the dipstick is all the way in the tube, that riveted part of the dipstick is sitting right next to (almost touching) the exhaust manifold, which in turn is heating up this part of the dipstick causing the smoke/deposit formation. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up with these trucks. --Ponch

This can't be normal. Do you know which motor oil you have in there?
When did you last check the dip stick? How many miles to you have on the car? On the motor oil?

The "Smoke" you're seeing might be condensation evaporating, and perhaps the dipsticks are just a nature of the beast? I know I've seen a lot of very well maintained cars with varnished up dipsticks just because the design isn't the greatest... but I would be worried about the deposits for sure, and if it really is smoke, yikes!

Smoke and sludge in an 08 is hard to believe. Maybe the dealership poured beer instead of motor oil into the sump.

What does it look like under the oil cap.
This sludge/varnish/deposits,etc whatever you want to call it scrapes off with my finger nail. The vehicle has Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in it also....it is a VortecMax silverado with the 6.0 V8. I noticed this ONLY after beating on it/towing, running it hard. Just to prove my point those with 2007/2008 silverado's go run your truck up to operating temp/run it HARD for a bit shut it down and pull the dipstick. Let me know what you see??????
I also checked under the cap, everything looks fine. 17,000 miles on this vehicle, with nothing but Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 since about 3000 miles.

A co-worker of mine had a 2000 with the 6.0L. It was a hi mileage service vehicle when he bought it used. It had 210Kmi on it when he sold it. Original engine, trans, etc. Point being; They last a long time.
