My son just bought a 2008 Honda Civic recently, and the oil cap reads 5w-20. I have a good bit of Castrol GTX 5w30 High Mileage that I got cheap, and I was wondering if it would be OK to use it in the Honda. My local Honda parts department has both the Honda A01 and A02 oil filter in stock with included crush washer for $5.99 each, so I am going to buy and use the A01 filter, and my son does plan on changing the oil filter every other oil change as recommended by Honda.

Where you live Im sure its fine. Ive been running 5w30 in my Honda 1.7. Its been cold here a few times this winter and everything has been fine.

OK thanks guys. Being here in NC, and it will be warming up in March which is just right around the corner, I figured it would be OK, but was not absolutely sure because I have never had to do maintenance on a Honda VTEC engine.

I went down to the the Honda parts department, and they said a service tech had come in, and got the last few A01 filters they had in stock, so I bought the A02(Fram made), and it did come with a crush washer, so I want have to go hunting one of those down.

I have no doubt that moving up a grade from what Honda recommends will cause no problems.
The OEM filter is a low efficiency rock catcher. It's nothing special. The crush washers typically last the life of the car. On the eight Hondas we've had, I've replaced zero crush washers.
I do wonder why you'd want to use buck a quart AZ clearance oil in this car.
I ordered a hundred quarts of this oil myself with free shipping less a $25.00 gift card. I figured that for seventy five cents a quart net, it would be a fine beater oil.
I don't think I'd be inclined to use it in a fairly new car that cannot have been cheap, since decent used Hondas never are.
