The almighty 2xx,xxx mile Escape I sold to my coworker for his daughter a while back has been rock solid up until now. She has driven to LA and back and a bunch of other places but with no prior warning the power steering died on her. She took it to the Ford dealer... symptoms are the wrench light came on and the steering wheel was hard to turn (as in, it lost power steering).

They are quoting $1900 to repair the vehicle (it eats oil so not worth putting $1900 into). I know that the electric power steering is a common problem with these: https://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Escape/2008/steering/

I've done some research and it seems like the most common solution is to replace the entire steering column assembly, however some people mention a torque sensor that can be replaced without changing the whole column. It looks like there are a few different codes that could lead to different things. Once I get my hands on the car (we are not accepting the Ford dealer's quote) I'll hook up my laptop and check things out.

Anyone here have experience with these systems, how to troubleshoot/diagnose, and how difficult it is to work on? We intend to use used/junkyard parts to repair it, if possible.

I am concerned that the failure was sort of our fault... I read on here, or somewhere else, when I first bought it, that it's extremely important for the electric power steering system to have matching front tires. Of course, the first thing I did was buy 3 random used tires and have them installed (when I first bought it, it had 1 new tire and 3 worn out ones). So it has four mismatched tires.

No help with the steering but the path you're going down is EXACTLY why I don't/won't sell vehicles to friends/co-workers and for the most part family. It's like no matter what the car is or what it cost suddenly it has a forever warranty. Hope it doesn't cost you much time and money.

Nah, my coworker is going to be taking care of purchasing any parts and doing most of the labor. I'll just be diagnosing with my laptop and maybe assisting the repair. No warranty is implied LOL. It's a car with over 200K that I sold him for $1000. Not my fault if it has any issues.

I've done some further research and it seems like I can get a used steering column with the torque sensor built in for about $250:

Or if we buy the sensor separate it's quite a tricky process to install, and even a tiny mistake means buying another sensor. How stupid! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6KGTfZLTsU

Now that's assuming the sensor is even the problem, once I have the car in my hands and hook up my computer we can check that. That's mostly what I"m seeking input on... the diagnostic process to determine what exactly the problem is.

I agree and the engineers decided to built all sorts of stupidity into the designs.

Both front tires must be identical - or the PS fails? That's just plain ol' stupid

Electric Power Steering is very simple & has been around for awhile now.

You will need or have access to a capable scan tool first & foremost to diagnose this! If you find a B2278.....The Torque Sensor is more than likely malfunctioning!
B3104 is for Steering Angle Sensor malfunction......The Torque Sensor & Angle sensor are built into the same part!!!!

The Current/Updated Ford part is CL8Z-3F818-A

It comes with a Alignment Tool.....You have to be pretty careless/ignorant to mess this up!!!
