2008 Audi A5 Coupe

I saw one come up on my bumper and had a second and third look as it passed me on snow packed road. It is a beautiful car especially in that black.

It's beautiful car. I don't think I would want to own any of these new V8 Audi's beyond the warranty. RI_RS4 sent me a link to the engine pdf on the RS4 engine and it's beautiful too, but complicated beyond belief.

That's the nicest thing I've ever read about those eyesores. Still, you get more grill for the money with a Cadillac.

Looks really nice from the pictures. The rear end reminds me of an Aston Martin. The S5 should be an awesome car. Now if Audi could only improve upon their reliability, I would have considered one long ago.

However, my future dream car still remains the 335i bimmer, especially after I read this (Forbes):

"...Our A5 test vehicle had the six-speed manual. It felt imprecise moving the gears, especially compared to that of the BMW 3 Series.

The A5 comes standard with quattro all-wheel drive, which makes the car safer and more drivable in everyday situations and can improve acceleration at the expense of added weight, complexity and gas mileage. When pushing the A5 through quick turns, it feels heavier and less agile than the BMW 3 Series..."

That "next" A4 model is already on the market here in Europe.

That is a very attractive car. It's what the new Honda Accord could have been...

Also another great interior by Audi.

Reading
about cars like this is a somewhat insufficient reference comapred to going out and driving them, which I highly recommend.

If I was reading that for content, I might have been more drawn to this segment "quattro all-wheel drive, which makes the car safer and more drivable in everyday situations and can improve acceleration" because there is more to a car than the single feature, which it must excell at to appeal to their market segment. I prefer a car that does many things well, as that reflects my driving cycle, not 0-60mph, skidpad numbers, the most expensive, least expensive, most reliable, biggest, smallest, best mpg or whatever...a car that does them all well is the most desirable. Maybe the A5 is that, maybe not. I'm just saying not to focus on one single aspect of the BMW, like "lightness"...that's just part of the steering load. Current Audis have very heavy steering feel but Forbes is not my touchstone publication on these matters.

I hate it.

Not only will a G37 or Altima Coupe SE smoke it on the quarter mile, but the A5 is uglier and pricier. Not to mention you get the Audi [lack of] reliability.

Only good thing is the handling - I'm sure it will stick to the road like crazy,

But that's what the S5 version is for. S5 does 0-60 in 4.9s, which is about half a second quicker than a G37. S5 does quarter mile in 13.3s, while the G37 does it in 14s, according to Edmunds.

Still, the straight on acceleration figures are only a part of the picture. There are plenty of cheaper domestics that have good quarter mile figures, but that's where their story ends. They lack composure when thrown in the twisties.

That's certainly subjective. Different people like different things. I for one think that the A5's front end isn't much worse than Altima Coupe's. :)

true...the Audi had AWD, and they compared it to a 335i...but then, if you add about $2000 you can get the 335i model with AWD, which is 335xi I think...so that compared with the other pluses the 335i, (or xi), the bimmer is still the winner for me...at least on paper..
However, I do agree that there's nothing better than driving the car(s) yourself and comparing...

I wouldn't pay much attention to what you read in the car mags, either.

Just get what will make you happy.

When it comes to mid and higher end car reviews, they reviews are mostly written by people who can't buy them, for people who can't buy them.

Hey Pete, good points ya make. After re-reading my post about the A5, I did sound a bit harsh. From a roll, the G37 and A5 should be about even - the A5 does the 4.9 sec qtr mile thanks to the all-wheel drive, which helps LOTS - so yes, it will smoke an Alty coupe or G37 from 0mph.

Good point you made about there being more to a car than acceleration. I simply couldn't agree more. For example, a V8 Camaro or Firebird may run a 13.xx qtr mile but that's literally where the car's offerings end. Bad reliability. Doesn't look that attractive. Very cheap interior. I do like how the A5, Altima Coupe and G37 are all well-rounded sport coupes that offer much more than just speed - it's also what makes them more practical that a true sports car.

Haha yes, another good point.
Unfortunately, as long as I'm a student, I am currently out of the market for a nice sports coupe. I love to dream though. It's going to make it all the more special once I have my grad school diploma. Just hoping my thirst for fine automotibles doesn't vanish by then.
