i think the rear shocks are done, every bump in the road you hear clanking from the rear end, almost like something is loose under there. from my research i have the premium ride suspension (ZW7), looking for replacements, not paying for Nivomat (oem) shocks, would like to with Bilstein, any thoughts ?

Bilsteins are good, but if you have a rattle it might not be coming from the shocks so some troubleshooting is in order.

Bilstein shocks are awesome!

Just remember, if you replace the nivomats with regular shocks, you'll also need new springs. Springs that come with nivomats are very weak, almost just for show.

How many miles on the truck? Are the fronts the original? Because you might want to replace those, too. I'd suggest the KYB Strut Plus quick struts, which include Gas-a-just shocks in this application.

I'd recommend the KYB quick struts up front and Gas-a-jsut shocks for the rear. Bilstein is also very good, though.

Rock Auto has the OEM ZW7 rear shocks for only $57.79 each.

I found this helpful explanation of the suspensions offered on your truck.

Did u check the suspension components? Dont those have sway bar end links in the rear?

+1 on the sway bar end links!!!
These are very common failure points on GM SUV's. If you can, get MOOG replacements with grease zerks.

Not saying you dont need shocks too - might be a good idea to do it all while you are down there.

If it's loaded up with Nivomats it likely has the heavy duty sway bar, too.

ALL the mounts are suspect, and cheap, too. Change those first.

I have yet to see any worn out Nivomats on anything, even with very high mileage...

The shocks with ZW7 have sensors in them that will trigger a code and light if a bypass resistor is not used. I went through this a few times and finally got the set up from Arnott.
These guys are great and stand behind their products, the shocks are bilstein and modified for use in these trucks.

If you need shocks or a compressor don't mess around and Mickey Mouse it, its nothing but trouble, call these guys.

Edit: SteveSRT8 The shocks and compressor rot out in the salt belt but also in coastal areas with high humidity. I had a compressor and shocks rot right through on my 06 Yukon Denali XL.

bilstein, or monroe reflex. I've used both in heavier vehicles that carried loads. I actually prefer the monroe reflex over the bilstein. I put reflexes in an 08 grand cherokee and an 03 T&C. they do not make them for many makes and it's only for larger vehicles. I have bilstein 5100s on the tundra.

The monroe's were more "dynamic" in that they allowed more suspension travel but also seemed to have variable rates of control. You could slap a speed bump and they'd let the car travel over but seemed to clamp down before rebound started. So they were both loose and firm at the same time. They soften some as they break in but to me were a nice ride.

The bilsteins are truly weird how they are tuned on my truck. The rears are too soft with a load but too firm empty. It's like the thresholds in the valving just aren't right. the front is always a little harsh for my liking, unless you hit a big dip, then they open up and the suspension bottoms out. I'm being picky.... but I'm just not as much of a fan of them on my truck.

I would not hesitate to recommend the monroe reflex for your tahoe. they may not last as long as the bilsteins, but I would enjoy the time more.

+1 I would replace the cheaper part first and hopefully that will do the trick. Bilstein are great shocks though if you are looking to replace them anyways

not a denali, 145k, i will check the sway bar this weekend, the clunking and rattling is awful, i think i could run over a quarter in the road and it would clunk or rattle

Agreed, you guys fight problems we simply never see down here.

BTW, no Nivomats on that vehicle per my searching. They don't use any external hardware at all, they simply are hydraulic...

We are using Gabriel Ultras exclusively on all our trucks. They are excellent and very well priced.

Hold up well to 9000+ pound vehicles...

I have used them on occasion, not bad at all and priced right. The worst thing i ever put on a truck was the Monroe Reflex, the rears were blown out in a couple of months on the Expedition.
