2007 Honda Civic Oil Recommendations

My father recently purchased a 2007 Honda Civic LX coupe. This is his first brand new car in over 35 years, and he is very meticulous with his cars. His former daily driver was a '76 Chev Chevelle coupe, that was still in immaculate condition.

He is planning on changing the factory fill at about 2000 kms after he completes a break in routine. Then he will run a 5w20 conventional oil until 10,000 kms or so, and switch to a synthetic.

Any recommendations on what dino and what synthetic would work well in this car would be appreciated. Something OTC is preferred, since I don't think I could convince my dad to use something otherwise.

If there are other late model Civic owners with positive/negative oil experience, their input would be appreciated as well.

I would use one of the following:

Dino in order of preference:
1.) Havoline DS
2.) Valvoline
3.) Quaker State

Synthetics in no particular order:
Havoline Synthetic
Pennzoil Platinum
Quaker State Q
Valvoline Synpower

Any of the above oils would do a great job. My new Hyundai Entourage minivan also specs 5W-20 as the preferred grade and I will likely use one of the Castrol products because I can almost always get it on sale somewhere...

Depends on oci, 5k oci, any conventional will do. But I see your location as ON, is that Ontario? If so run a syn in the winter. Last winter we got -30 celcius in Montreal and the thought of conventional in that cold breaks my heart.

If you want to run 10k oci or higher, use a good syn like Amsoil's 0w20, or similar.

Most would say skip on the synthetic and use a dino like Havoline or Motorcraft at 5000mi.

Amsoil 5W-20 and follow the OLM.

Amsoil 0W-20 if he wants PAO/Ester synthetic.

Yes, ON is Ontario, and my father lives in Sudbury which is colder than Montreal, and has its fair share of days in the -30 to -40 range. He wants to run one oil all the time, so after 10,000 he wants to run synthetic all year.

Not sure what OCI he is planning on yet, since he was always a 3000 mi/5000 km guy with his previous car. I am not sure about the availability of Havoline in his area, so I will have to check on that. I know Amsoil is available at Canadian Tire, so I will suggest that to him.

Would a dino with high moly be good to use during the first 10,000 kms? Which 5W20s have high amounts of moly?

What would be a good suggested OCI for this car? The Honda manual just says to follow the OLM, but the dealer says 8000km (5000 mi). Extra long intervals and oil analysis are not options for my father. It will be hard enough to convince him to go more than 5000 kms (3000 mi).

The Honda dealer here in WI, use a semi synthetic 5w-20. My friend has a 05 civic, he changed the factory fill at 1500 miles and used the Honda 5w20 till 5000 miles. Then he switched to Motorcraft semi synthetic 5w-20. Which he has used since with no problems, 4-5k oci. Car now has 60k on it.

Oldswagon, go with Amsoil's xlm 5w20, or Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 for easy cold starting, great protection, and moderate oci's. 8k km is no big deal in that civic. There are better oils, but better only in the sense that you can extend the oci. If that's not an option for your father, then xlm or PP will work great.

Dino will do fine during the summer months if you want to save money. Don't forget most people run dino year round but you wouldn't be here if you didn't care more then most people

-30 to -40 celcius will solidify any dino based oil which doesn't sit well with me, hence a good thin synthetic like xlm was my choice.
