2006 LTC Coolant

2006 Lincoln Town Car, 113K Miles
This car belongs to my dad. He is [censored] bent on using Prestone AMAMs (All Makes All Models) antifreeze in his car. My suggestion to him was, remove the t-stat and do a flush, install a new t-stat, and use distilled water. Opinions?

G-05 - Motorcraft Premium Gold or Zerex G-05. You will need 2 gallons for the correct 50/50 mixture.

A good alternative would be Toyota's Super Long Life coolant, which is already mixed (50/50). You will need 4 gallons if you decide to go down that route.

Falcon, I know this and have tried my hardest to get him to use MC or G-05. He is still set on using the Prestone. I have even posted this on a Lincoln forum and they state the same thing. But, a select few say to use the Prestone without losing any sleep, just do a thorough flush.

Guess if he's [censored] bent on using Prestone AM/M no matter what you say, then it is what is. A complete system flush/exchange using distilled water would be the way to go 'if' that is what he is going to use.

That said, it's not like G-05, either Motorcraft or Zerex is that expensive, not available as a concentrate, not readily available and not a Long Life/Extended Life coolant. As the chart below indicates the 06 LTC clearly calls for G-05 as spec'd by Ford. But if the gaskets, o-rings and hoses are compatible and the system tight, Prestone 'might' be ok.

I had no doubt

The thought of running AM/AM just makes me cringe though, after all I have read about it on this board for years. Going off memory, I seem to recall AM/AM being Dex-Cool, which isn't a bad coolant. But I certainly wouldn't run that in my Mod motor, given the gaskets and such were not designed for it.

Make a long story short, the previous owner of my Grand Marquis had the water pump replaced and the idiot mechanic refilled with this stuff without flushing out the system. It was a total mess in there and the only way I was able to get it out, and clean up the mess was to run 2 gallons of distilled vinegar with 2 gallons of water for an hour and thoroughly flush the living daylights out of the system before running Mercedes-Benz citrus flush. That's a bad experience, and it could have possibly been avoided, or caused less damage so to speak, if the system was properly flushed.

There's a lot of other decent choices out there, even if you choose the run Motorcraft Premium Green and change it more regularly. In this day and age though, I just don't believe any coolant is AM/AM.
