A friend has a 2006 6.0 F250 Powerstroke. If you start it and drive off soon after starting, it moves fine. If you let it idle for 10 min or so, it won't move in any gear. If you shut it down and restart, it will move. It has 150K miles, trans has never been serviced. I'm going to replace both filters and do a few spill and fills and go from there...any ideas?

Trans is low on fluid - bet it gets better when you change the fluid and filter and set it to the proper level.

I bet it works better when the fluid is hot (expanded) as well as when you first start it (full pan). The bad combination is cold fluid (contracted) and idling (pan level low from fluid circulating).

likely a leak in the high pressure oil system. the system will keep pressure for a little while but the leak gets worse as the oil heats and it wont provide enough fuel to move the truck. the transmissions in those truck were almost indestructible.

Adding Lubegard after 3 drain and fills might be a good idea. Might be the solenoids sticking up.

Makes sense especially if the internal converter seals are a bit worn and the top half of the converter drains back easily to the sump after shutdown. So on startup you have a usable oil level but quickly pump the converter full pulling a couple quarts out of the sump and then have low fluid. Not familiar with Fords but if it has a dipstick that's the first check, then any powertrain codes in the computer.
