Hi guys. My wife’s 2005 Honda Accord is coming due for an oil change, and I am wanting a little bit cheaper oil, but I don’t want to sacrifice quality. We bought the car new, and after the break in period, I put Mobil 1 5W-20 in and that is what it has been running since. I change the oil every 10,000 miles. This change will be at the 48,000 mark.

What oil would you switch to that is cheaper than Mobil 1, but can do the car well at a 10,000 mile OCI? The car drives 90 miles HWY round trip 5 days a week.

I would (and actually have) switched to Penzoil Platinum. Excellent UOAs and can be found on sale at a variety of places. My last 6-qt purchase was $1.99 / qt at Pep Boys.

I would recommend Motorcraft synthetic blend, or for a little more money but still cheaper than M1, try Pennzoil Platinum Plus synthetic. Since Honda recommends a 10,000 mile OCI on regular dino, these should be real safe, since you apparently drive almost 25,000 miles a year.

Asking 10,000 miles of an oil is a lot, even if it is mobil1. You can use regular dino, something like Exxon Superflo, changed at 5,000 mile intervals and still come out ahead.

If you want to stick with 10K mile intervals i would stick with a quality full synthetic like Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Syntec, Mobil1, Amsoil, or Valvoline Synthetic.

Isn't the Honda recommended interval 10,000? You could run any of the oils mentioned above and be ok since the miles you are putting on are predominately highway miles.

I continue to be very happy with the Havoline 5W-20 changed every 5K. Reason why includes: No oil use, Kendall GT-1 blend used before the Havoline did burn about a 3/4qt in 5K, in recent cold mornings around 0 or slightly above, there has been no strange start up noises. The oil stays fairly clean and still has a nice brown tint after 5K. And it is reasonably priced all the time, and available everywhere.

I run Schaeffer 5W20 in the wife's 05 Accord to 10K intervals with ease.(it could go longer) approx.$3.40qt. I love all of their oils.

The only oils I would run 10,000 are Mobil1EP or Amsoil. Both have a history of easily going that far with no excess wear on your engine. PP maybe, GC yes, Vakvoline Syn probably not. JMO..

If the trips are relatively long (> 10 miles each), I'd just dump in any 5W20 conventional oil on sale and make sure that the level stays full.

My Schaeffer 7000 5W20 goes 10K in my 05 Accord with excellent results and 1/2 the price of M1 EP. It could have run longer but I just change it since it is priced well.
