I am looking to possibly purchase a 2005 Ford Taurus with 3.0 V6. Only 28500 miles. I can get it $2250 below retail. Any opinions on the durablilty of these engines and transmissions? Any know specific problems?

That gen Taurus came with the option of two 3.0's. The 3.0 vulcan debuted back in the early 80's and is a cast iron, OHV valve engine putting out about 160hp. The optional 3.0 Duratec is an all aluminum, DOHC, putting out 200hp.

A quick pop of the hood will let you know what you're looking at. If I were looking to buy, I'd prefer it have the duratec. But, the vulcan will do you OK also.

With such low miles on the one you're looking at, I doubt there's much to be concerned about at present. Biggest potential downside further down the road is trans issues, but if you stay on top of fluid/filter changes you'll be OK.

Vehicle will be seeing 75 miles one way highway per day. Do not think that it is the Duratec engine. Fluid changes will be kept up to ensure longevity.

Good car. Go for it. With high miles, the cam synchronizer is a problem. They were poorly lubed by design. You'll know it's bad when you hear chirping on the side of the engine opposite the serpentine belt.

Ditto on transmission fluid maintenance.

As others said, keep on the maintenance and those cars can last a very long time.

There are two Taurus' in my family now, a '98 and a '00. Both have just under 170,000 miles and run well.
