I changed the oil in the Uplander about 400 miles ago to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30. The engine has never ticked before but just over this last week I have noticed it has a single tick that is loudest on the first start of the day, it quiets down after it warms up some, but is always there. Never ticked before, just started about a week ago. Im hoping this is not a serious problem. Could the Mobil 1 have caused this? I know the oil didnt break anything but could it cause such a noise? Im going back to SOPUS next OCI for sure, Mobil 1 has not impressed me at all, overall the engine is noisier with this oil and now this. Probably going to use Quaker State Ultimate Durability or Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 next time around. Might even consider Pennzoil conventional. I want to keep using syn in this van but if dino would stop this noise I'd go for it. But before dino Ill use Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker State Ultimate Durability to see if it stops. What are your thoughts on this...wish I had a video, Its not a fast tick, ticks about 2 times per second if you can imagine that, and you can here it best with the hood open looking down on the engine, its the Chevy 3.5 push rod, no vvt.

I have heared people say that m1 made their engine click clack and tick. I personally use Quaker State Ultimate Durability. I have been using the 0w20 in everything for the last year. 93 geo1.0, 98 buick3800ser2, 98 asro awd, 07 fusion, thats my auto fills using Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0w20 only. The quiets they have ever ran.
I use it in my small engines to.
I run it 150+ hrs in my honda em400 genpack
125+hrs briggs 205cc ohv powering logsplitter

I was just asking if it was normal...its a pretty obvious SINGLE tick when you start your car, still noticeable after it reaches operating temp but not as loud. If this is M1 fault then wouldnt the noise have started right when I put M1 in the sump?

I don't get what a "single tick" is. If my engine ticks ONCE everytime i drive I don't think it's a problem

Single as in its only one part or whatever making the ticking noise. Its not multiple ticks coming from multiple places.

If you have a single lifter tick, then I'm quite sure you have something in a lifter causing it to slightly colapse and loseing some oil pressure in that lifter. I had a 91 Ranger V6 that had a weak lifter from day one until we sold it with 354K(miles). The M1 is a great oil for cleaning and may have dislogded a piece that collected in a lifter.

Our Silverado has lifter tick bad on the first start of the day, but after is warmed up its completely quiet, the Uplander tick, whatever it may be, happens all the time. Never goes away.

Im a Honda person myself. Ford would probably be my first choice if I bought American, followed by GM. The Silverado has had the lifter tick for quite a while. That truck has been beaten on but still runs good, not great but good. It has 135,000 miles currently. Im not worried about it as it is a company truck given to my father, but they pay for the maintenance and what not. The Uplander tick started out of the blue about 400 miles after the Mobil was put in. Again, I wont be using Mobil products for a long time, I think they are overrated. A good oil, but for my applications SOPUS has won me over.

I've never been impressed by the Mobil 1 synthetic marketing machine. But I AM impressed with their conventional based Mobil Super 5000.
A conventional oil with great results at a very value oriented price.

A lot of folks here on BITOG find that Mobil Super 5000 is as good or better in performance, and durability than Pennzoil conventional.

Try some Maxlife Syn blend 5w30. My guess is the tick will subside. Mobil 1 is noisy in lots of engines. If you have to go synthetic then try Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

Switch back and see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't, you may have a lifter with a stuck plunger.

You could also have an exhaust leak. Have you tried locating the tick with the hood open?

Yep. There is 1.

Op
I seriously doubt there is truly a problem. Run out the interval and try something else. M1 makes a quality product but some engines experience added acoustics. I'm going to venture a guess that the M1 is slightly thinner than the last oil and the lifter is bleeding empty at shut down, then pumping back up,unless its a constant tick then I don't have any ideas.

Unfortunately it is a constant tick. Just going to live with it and will use a SOPUS syn next time and will probably go back to a Puro Classic and see how it sounds then.

Could be a dirty lifter. I would be inclined to throw a bottle of MMO at it and see if it cleans it.

Im in the same boat as the OP, My Silverado has 75,000 miles on it and has had a steady diet of syn from about 40,000 mile on. Its always been wisper quiet. I used Valvoline syn and PU, PP, THEN decided Mobil 1 was a great idea.. wrong... Im sure its providing great protection but i to have gotten a tick in truck just since switching over to M1 ! Exact same thing happend to our Milan, TICK, TICK, TICK... EEESH im completely over Mobil 1. Im dumping the Oil in the truck very soon and will post up a thread if i find going back to a previously used oil quiet's it all back down (same for the car). The only things i own that DONT tick on Mobil 1 is my 07 Accord and my Yamaha R1.
Now in all fairness its not like its a rod knocking, were talking about a very faint valve train tick in both my autos that showed up after switching to this oil.
