2005 C55 AMG - Ticking Only When Warm

Just bought this car recently and I did not hear any ticking, I suppose because the car was completely cold.

After the car warms up it starts ticking. I've done some looking around and a lot of people are saying it's normal, or their car does it too, but I don't like it.

The car had an oil change at the MB dealership at 57k miles and now it has 63k. MB uses a full synthetic 0w-40.

Typically, i've read that lifter issues are when the car is cold, but mine seems the opposite. I spoke to a MB tech on the side and he said to give BG MOA a try, but I can't find it local. I guess i'll have to order it.

Should I be trying a heavier oil or just try the BG MOA?

Injector knock? I don't know a whole lot about your particular vehicle but on my Altima there is a ticking noise related to the fuel injectors. No harm though.

Thats sounds like injectors for sure, if its the 5.5 there are no lifters its overhead cam.not sure on the bigger engine.

Well, they are not really lifters, but perform a similar function.
Just like a 40+ year old system on some Fords.

These 5.5 engines have known cam/valvetrain wear problems.

Sounds like could be a worn cam, pull the valve covers and see what you can find.

No-one would be able to register what they hear based on what wear patterns..not likely. This fella just wants to know what we think it sounds like..to me it sounds like injectors .whats it "sound like" to you ??Thats it.... no pulling parts etc.

I do appreciate the comments. Even with a stethoscope it's hard to determine if it's injector or valvetrain. One particular injector sounds louder than the other.

First I don't think its the injectors, if it was it would throw a code. Have a dealer hook up SDS and see what's going on. Also while your at it have them pull the VMI and see what its service history looks like.

To me it sounds almost like an M119 with the end caps blown off the little plastic oil bridges.


Does the sound go away when you gun it? If its lifters they can get clogged and when you spike the oil pressure they pump up.

I've tried gunning it when there are walls next to me so I can hear it echo. It sounds like the ticking stops around 4k or so, but the exhaust is pretty loud on this vehicle.

First thing I'd do it change the oil. If it is a sticky lifter odds are that its characteristics will be changed, if not eliminated. If it's been on the rather long oem OCIs, then I'd guess the problem is due more to gunk in a lifter than worn parts.

I had the oil changed on Saturday and there was no change.

I finally found a local shop who sells BG products. I'm going to throw the MOA and the fuel cleaner stuff in it to see if it makes any difference.

I guess if no improvement there, I could try Kreen or something?

If nothing there, start tearing stuff apart!

Noisy injectors ...to be honest .I'll put my neck out there and say what everyone else is thinking....You're being too picky ..You have a high horesepower Mercedes-Benz engine that takes alot of fuel to deliver said HP ,brother, you have to live with the consequences... loud injectors ...engine noise .Oh my Godd ..holy cow ,stop the world,I have engine noise .I've had enough...We told you what it was .This is not "shop around 'till I get my correct response type of forum.

edit:just no need to go to a "thicker oil".

Its a hand built AMG V8, its not supposed to tick.

Again not an expert on the late model cars but I'm pretty sure the SDS would be able to tell you when the injectors are popping, and what the timing is. But I don't think its the injectors at all.

Go one some Mercedes forums and do a little research this isn't really an unknown problem. It seems like this could be caused from a few things, ie carbon build up, sticky lifters, one guy had an exhaust leak, etc.

Some diagnostic work is required.

It has hydraulic lifters.

Yeah are buckets that sit under each cam, oil pumps them up and when they get [censored] in the holes that doesn't happen. I have changed them on Mercedes before, there is a whole FSM procedure to test them.
