In my last UOA, the report came back with 1.0% fuel dilution. Car now has 109,000 on it. Mostly highway miles. All maintenance is up to date. Even had a valve adjustment.

I have 1,600 miles on Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20 and I'm already down 1/4qt. I'm almost positive that the level was full when I did the last oil change, so I'm faily confident that can be ruled out.

The only other thing I can think of is A) time for a new O2 sensor B)changing from reg M1 to EP caused a spike in oil consumption.

Any ideas? I was shocked that after only 1,600 miles on the oil it was down 1/4qt. Normal consumption for this car has always been around 1/2qt per 5k miles. Car is driven at 80 mph for 100 miles a day to and from work. All oils have had the same consumption previously.

1600 miles times 1/4 quart = 6400 miles a quart = NOT a problem.

The time for a O2 sensor is when the check engine light comes on.

Mobil changes their formula more often than anyone else.

I would not even give it a thought.

Take care, bill

True Bill, 1qt per 6,400 can be considered normal but it's not normal when oil consumption is up 40% all of a sudden.

But you don't know *if* it was full at the time. Even *if* it was, are you really going to be concerned with 1qt every 6,400 miles?

I sure would not.

Hopefully you have more important things to be worried about...

Maybe its the Tea?

I'm almost 100% positive it was full from the last change. My last UOA showed 1.0% fuel dilution which was the highest it's ever been and the car is driven 80% highway.

Tea?

One UOA report of high fuel I would not worry about. Get a few then worry.

I have an 02 CR-V with the same engine. It's always consumed a tad bit of oil. Not a lot, but maybe a quart over 3k miles? I have about 100k miles on mine and just recently I got my first CEL, I don't remember the code but I believe it was something to the effect of "catalytic converter inefficiency?"

my last UOA a month ago showed 0.5% fuel dilution. 89K on the car, which is a duplicate of Buster's. This was only the second UOA for this vehicle. Previous one was a year and a half ago at 40K and showed no fuel dilution. Same oil type and driving conditions. Driving conditions BTW are exactly the same as Buster's except it is only 60 miles a day.
Read on this board Terry suggested a FRAM air filter to combat Honda fuel dilution. This is what I am using.

Just wondering, how would an air filter affect fuel dilution? Not that I am second guessing Terry's recomendations, just curious is all.

Restricted intake flow supposedly leads to a rich condition. My 2.4, at 30k consumes nothing. I use 2-cycle oil in the fuel, which may help. My $.02c Buster, is that Mobil 1 burns easily. Maybe it's time to step up to a 30 weight.

I ran Mobil 1 5w30 and 10w30 before. Oil brand has never really made any significant difference in oil consumption. I have to check into other things first see what happens.

The slightest inaccuracy when originally checking the level would result in a major projected oil loss rate.
Also, temperature is important to level checking, especially when it is winter in your area [vs. a hot engine].
A bit more fuel is expected in winter conditions. The fuel injection simulates a choke, and runs richer a lot more of the running time.
I would not like to see any fuel of course, but so far, you don't really seem to have a problem, just the edge of normal running.

Sounds normal, most k-series motors (and the older b-series) tend to consume oil. Might try a 30wt to see if it helps slow down the consumption. Do you do a lot of spirited driving?

Let me put it this way, since I've edited the post several times before sending

What are YOU smoking?
