My work has a lightly (sort of) used 2004 E150 w/ 4.6 engine that won't turn more than 1 rotation either way by the crank with a breaker bar. The guy that was driving it said it was running very rough and kept driving it for 60 miles and took it to the shop that I don't really trust and they said the motor is toast. The van has 75k miles on it and the last record I can find for an oil change was 25k before but the guy says he thinks it had been changed since then.

I have tried starting it and before the starter would just make a hammering sound and when I jumped it, it would only click once so it is quite possibly locked.

Long story short they are willing to sell it to me for ~$1000 and I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts. I'm willing to swap motors if I can do it for $2000 or $2500. Any input is appreciated.

I recently put a Promar Engine into a customers 04. I was really impressed with their quality. Long block i think was 2400.00 and you had 30 days to return the core. Free delivery and core pickup.

Sounds like it's blown to me. remove the belt and starter. Then try to turn it over

Sounds like a really good deal to me. I would just put a wrecking yard motor and call it good. Of course I would change all fluids as well. See how much motors are going for so you know where you are at $$$ wise on the motor.

Did you pull the cab? Every shop around here does, they say it's easier than trying to pull the engine with the cab on.

What is a reasonable price to pay someone to swap it. Most numbers I'm getting are about $1000 which seems reasonable for labor. Ideally the motor won't be destroyed. I'm going to try and pull the belt and see if I can get it spinning again. Is it a good bad or indifferent sign that I can move the crank some. I didn't remove the plugs as it seems like a pain with the setup of the fuel rails on these. Thanks again!

This was in his truck, but for a Van yes I would pull the cab. Remember I have a lift so pulling the cab is easy for us. You can pull it out just alittle more work.

I just txt him he payed 2299.00 for the long Block with a 3 year warranty. I got the gaskets at Ford. He spent the extra money to get the injectors cleaned and flowed.

I used to be a Jasper dealer for the engines we didn't do inhouse, but these promar engines are really impressive. They have a nice website and vids of their process also. Price is right, quality is good and I love the core policy. Free delivery and core pickup is tough to beat aswell.

Whats the oil level look like when you got it? Is something else is siezed up you wont be able to turn it over with the belt on. So removing the belt will tell you if your looking in the right direction or not

It's a fleet vehicle and we normally take vehicles to a shop that is super convenient but I don't trust or think they are terribly competent. I think they may have thought that they could just say it needs a new motor and we would just write a check and do it. They changed all the fluids etc and when I called the guy said he that it had a rod knock. So I don't really have any way to tell what the fluid looked like before.

I have pulled a 5.4 2v and you cannot get at the top 2 transmission bolts with the cab on. If you are getting 1000 dollar quotes then take em. And make sure those top 2 bolts are tight.

No, Ford called for 5W20 in this van.

Even if the engine is toast, $1000 is a great deal for a 2004 E-Series with 75K. It would be well worth putting a new engine in if the van is in good shape overall.
