I service writer is no more than a hotel desk clerk. Of course they'll check you in.

To me it's whether or not the tech was honest about it. With that many miles, he/she may just be right.

Do a couple drain and fills and see if anything changes...

Of course this is what the dealer is going to say... Dealership management wouldn't touch it for the liability, techs won't touch it because it's not a quick brake job that pays 3 hours flat rate.

They took your money to tell you nothing. They pulled it in, saw the mileage, deemed it radioactive, and told you worst case to get rid of you (or, if you bit, the massive bill would be worth their time). Sorry, but they charged you for basically nothing.

Yup, that's pretty much what happened.

One of the many, many reasons I got out of service. A free friend to friend recommendation such as "be prepared for a huge bill or take to a trans shop" without a bill is highly discouraged now.

What I would suggest, if you haven't, is contact Jiffy Lube and have them reprint a receipt, and get details on the type of transmission fluid they would have used. They might just stock a generic synthetic that covers Matic-S and didn't cause damage, which might narrow down the potential causes. Or, it may lead to a payoff from JL due to improper fluid being used. I know JL (and most large chains) basically have a quarterly slush fund to cover engine/trans replacements due to malpractice, they celebrate stores/territories being under-budget, and that definitely does not mean zero incidents/payouts. A $1400 bill to them is a rounding error, if they are indeed at fault.

Your funny because the fact Matic-S is nothing but a Dexron III clone. What did Jiffy Lube do use Type F? If so there would be a lot of other faults and a lot more transmissions kaput.

OP you have a transmission which is nearly 2 decades old with high miles it is going to be hard to find someone willing to take on the job of repairing who is competent. You may want to start looking for a low mileage used transmission or save for a new one. Even if this problem is fixed there likely more around the corner.

Going to drain the ATF, refil and go from there.
A repair shop found a used one with approx 69k miles for $850 and $450 to install.

Will see what happens

Removed the 10mm bolt that secures the dip stick on the ATF fill tube and observed a very small tip under the dip stick cover/handle (approx. 3mm tip).
Did the dip stick break off? Or do I have to buy a dip stick?

I am not familiar with these transmissions so I don't want to jump the gun and say that the dip stick has been broken off.
There is a small tag on the dip stick cover which indicates that Matic J must be used. I know that Matic S can be used now.

Trying to drain and refill the ATF and it looks like I'm going to have to drain the fluid into a transparent container and refill using the exact same amount.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Drained the oil and it was awful black in color.
Refilled using the correct ATF (Matic S)

Hard shift still at 1st to 2nd gear.

Probably going to get a used transmission on the car.
Just worried that a different component, such as the control module, might also be bad.

I will have to take it one step at a time

By the color of the fluid and symptoms you likely have mechanical issues going on that the pcm has tried to adapt to over time.

Either have it rebuilt or by a new/used unit.

Drive it around for a bit with the new fluid. You could also try to disconnect the negative terminal for a while to reset the control module (be mindfull of alarms & imobilizers).
The black color is probably because JL never changed the ATF.

My other concern is the computer or transmission control module being bad.
Dealer said that they couldn't communicate with the computer.

Wanted to drive a few weeks then drain and refill again. Matic S ATF is expensive but getting a rebuilt or used transmission is more expensive.

Apparently, I need to buy one from the dealer.
