Great forum, I'm over there as well. Although, once you read about all the strange things you have to fix on those cars, you'd never want to own one.
Anyway, if it's the 4-speed auto then it's correct that the transmission does not have a dipstick. You'll need a scantool to verify the fluid temperature, then you can use the check plug to check the fluid level.
How does this check plug that you speak of work? How do you check the fluid? Special procedure I take it?
The fluid has to be heated to check the level.
I have an Auto XRay scan tool, maybe that will work.

In Brian's thread, he discusses his experience in the third-to-last post.
If you pull the pan and put 7 quarts in, chances are you might be able to skip the fluid level check altogether. Of course, measure the amount that you remove from the pan to verify that it's actually 7 quarts as it may vary by model.
