I just bought a 2001 Dodge Ram 4wd with the 5.9 and 206k miles. I was told the transmission was rebuilt at 150k. Truck runs great and it shifts well. However the shifter moves way to far/has a ton of slop. To put it in Reverse it will show in the D spot and to get it in drive the shifter is all the way down in the 1 or 2 position. I got under it and looked and it seems like the shifter on the transmission is moving way to far, but I don't see any play in the linkage itself. Any ideas?

I think their is a bolt on the shift linkage underneath you can adjust to get all the gears to select properly. Also there might be an adjustment wheel right under the dash by the steering column that will let you adjust where the gear selector points. So if you are in first and it says drive you can move the orange square to the 1. Anyway those are some things that might be their.

If nobody can give a better answer, I would lie under there with a flashlight while you had a friend sit in the driver's seat shifting the truck until you saw what happened. Go from there.
