2001 honda civic 1.7

I have a 2001 honda civic 5 speed with 163,000 miles. Guy i bought it from said he did 5,000 mile oil change intervals with reg.quacker state conventional 5w20. Car runs great and uses or leaks no oil. What oil would you guys use on this car. Its driven mostly city 10 miles each way to work with the weekend freeway trips. I have no experience with quaker state and really value your opinion. Thank you everyone.

I am a fan of the previous owner of that car. In my girlfriend's 2002 Civic with the 1.7 L engine, I use Quaker State 5W-20... works great. (5w-20 is the oil Honda originally specced for this car, but now they say to use 0w-20, but I have no intention of switching)

We have an 01 Civic with almost 250k on it, running mostly conventional Castrol GTX 5W20. Quaker State is a fine oil, and pretty much any 5W20 will work for you. Keep changing the oil and the engine will far outlast the rest of the vehicle. Our Civic is on its last legs, mostly suspension-wise. The engine and transmission are doing great though.

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20, changed every 10k miles.

Has the timing belt been replaced?

I have a '03 Civic EX with 127k on it.

It sees 72 miles each day that's 95% highway. I've been running Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20 with their 110 filter for a number of years. Doesn't use oil and just runs like a champ.

Redline MTL in the transmission made it like butter.

Edit - Forgot to say it's changed every 10k.

Wow,thanks guys. Makes me feel better hearing those mileage numbers. Guess this engine is good for at least 200,000 sounds like. Do you think a high mileage oil would benefit at all. Im thinking...it does not leak or burn...do i really need that. I know its never seen synthetic so i really dont want to start now,ya know?

Yes timing belt was done at 140,000. Had receipts.

I'd run the cheap synthetic when it's on sale. NAPA, Super Tech, Quaker State Synthetic or syn blend. Usually it can be had for $15 or less and the cheapest you'll find conventional is about $10. Or a cheap conventional on sale for $10-$12. You're in MI so the syn and synthetic blends will be better in winter.

The D17 engine is easy peasy on oil.

Just use a quality oil (syn is my preference) and quality filter. Enjoy the car!

I like the EP for 10k+, AFE for up to 10k, and regular M1 for around 7.5. Life is simple and good oil is easy to pick for your car.

You got yourself a good car there. I bought a new 2001 civic EX and ran that thing until I bought my 2009 civic. Put 300,000. miles on it using quaker state synthetic 5w-20. Was burning about a quart at the end on a 7500 oil change interval. I would stick to 5000 interval with a good conventional oil and drive that bugger another 150,000.

Castrol Magnatec 5w20 or Quaker State DEFY 5w20.

I have a Civic 1.7 and use synthetic 0w20 and change it every 6000 miles. Any 5w20 or 0w20 from a major brand will do fine if changed on schedule. Mine has 211000 miles and still going strong.

Thanks for the input. My question now would be is 160,000 miles to many to start it on synthetic? Its never had synthetic?

You can run a synthetic at any time after the break in period on your Civic. I think on mine, because of the shot of moly the FF had, it was to wait until 6 months or 5k.

After that I've run all kinds of synthetic oils in it from Redline to M1 to the current use of Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

Have fun choosing your oil Mobil 1 Extended Performance works for 10k+ as a general rule and their AFE up to 10k+. Those are generalities but seem to be consistent from all the threads here. That D17 engine is very easy on oil.

You can go to the Mobil 1 site and they'll make recommendations. Other sites do the same. As a starting point, you can't do much better for that engine than Mobil 1 Extended Performance in either 0w-20 or 5w-20. Perhaps try Pennzoil Ultra or Ultra Platinum. Really, it's not that much different.
