2001 GMC van odometer malfunction

OK, I just got a 2001 GMC Savana. The odometer shows 85399 miles. When I drive it, it ticks off the miles as it should, but after shutting it off and restarting it, it returns to 85399. The trip meter likewise works while driving, but resets to zero when shut off.

Any advice?

So does this savana really have 85399? How many times did the PO keep driving this in its current condition? Sounds like the odometer is losing all power when you turn the key off, and resetting back to the last known mileage.

Not to hijack...

A guy I work with has a 2002 Silverado Z71 that did something similar. His just quit working altogether... for 2 years! It quit working at like 70K and came back on, 2 years later at 70K.

My '02 Ford exploder's odometer show mileage in cooler weather, but once it gets hot out it's blank. When it starts to work the mileage has always increased. makes it hard to tell when to change the oil.,

I have reason to believe that it has about 130k miles. But that's not really my concern. The oil pressure and the smog test results indicate that the engine is probably in good shape. But it would be nice to have a working odometer, wouldn't it?
