If it was me, I would pull the drain plug every 5k for a couple of times then every 30k.

Whats the history of your transmission? This is on your 01?

How many miles and what fluid changes were done before the repair?

My dads 01 civic has about 120k on its auto with never an issue.

never a service, took a dive (clutch) at 108k.

Ouch.

In his Civic, we just did drain and fills every 30k (since there is no filter) and its doing well at 120k.

Sorry to hear that you had problems.

With this new one, just get into drop and fill and you should not see any more problems.

Civic's have great manual transmissions. I have a Civic with 485k and my rebuild at 2k something was just bearings and seals. The rest was in like new condition. No matter what you do the roller bearings will wear out because they are a contact bearing. You will know when to replace them because they will start talking to you. I use Red Line MTL and am very pleased with it's performance, quiet, smooth shifting and it protects well too.

I think ANY brand Automatics (thats what he had to rebuild) need to have their fluid changed (drain and fill) more often than not for long life.

This "lifetime" fluid #@$%! does only one thing..

Make $$ for the rebuilders..

well, i just got under her to drain about .5 qts of oil out (must've overfilled at the last oil change) and noticed that this thing not only doesn't have a transmission drain plug, it "appears" there is no conventional "pan" to drop...
or am i just nuts????

Your correct, there is no pan to drop (there is a "lifetime"(hate that word) filter inside but there is a drain plug on it.

If I remember correctly, (my dad no longer has his Civic, sold it to a friend) the plug is towards (facing) the passenger side.

Another way is to suck out the fluid for the dip stick and replace what you took out.

I've been doing that since I bought a fluid extractor.

A lot easier for things like this.

Makes Power steering flushes easier too.

does the 01 have a drainplug?
If so, do i need to drop the pan?

YES, your 2001 Civic has a drain plug and you do not have to drop the pan. Its a simple drain and refill with 3 quarts of ATF.

I used the Honda Z1 ATF for both my parents automatic Hondas. You will be surprised just how dirty the magnetic drain plug gets on an Automatic Civic.

YES.....If the car is on a level ground, 3 quarts will come out when you remove the drain plug. Its a simple drain/refill with 3 quarts.

Since you had the trans recently rebuilt, I would do two drain/refills around 10K miles to get all the junk out of the trans.

When I did a drain & refill on my mom's 2001 Civic LX, I was surprised at how much metal shavings were on the magnetic drain plug.
