Hi all! I know you get this sort of topic a lot, but judging from the extreme enthusiasm you all have over oil, I'm guessing this won't be too much of a bother!

I currently have a 2000 Volvo V70XC with just over 135,000 miles. Right now I'm running PP 5w30 with 300mL of Lubro Moly.

I go back and forth between San Diego, Ca (Home; nice and warm) and Flagstaff, Az (School; very cold) but I do a LOT of highway driving, mostly at heavy load up mountain grades. The turbo gets used fairly often, but I never race the thing.

As the engine ages, I am worrying a little bit more about oil consumption. The car has had 10w30 almost it's whole life, but switching from 10W to 5W made a world of difference when starting at around 10 degrees. I definitely don't want an oil that will shear, a xW-30 on the "high end of 30" would be ideal. I am considering the following:

-GC 0W-30
-PU 5w30
-M1 10w30 HM (I have NEVER seen the 5w30 HM anywhere...)

I know they are all GREAT oils, but do you think any one of them might offer anything over another? With the sort of driving I do, might I want to try a xW-40 weight?

Thanks!

PU 5-30 gets my vote.Whatever amount of Ester that is in it will do better in any turbo application.

As far as I know, it consumes very little if any at all. I think the very minimal loss that I have (about a quarter of the measuring distance between low-high on the stick after several thousand miles) is from a small leak around my turbo and oil pan, both of which I hope to fix soon.

redline would be the best choice as stated above for turbo application. It contains a largest amount of ester.

Most of the 5 cylinder whiteblock guys use GC or m1 0w40. I wouldn't go with a boutique oil as these engines usually use up to a quart every 5-7k.

I use GC in my s60

Sounds good. I've been leaning towards the GC, especially since the consensus is that it is a little heavier than other 30 weights. But you don't think I would notice anything bad by using a 40 weight?

Or better, do I have anything to gain?
