2000 Silverado 5.3L oil consumption

I purchased my 2000 Silverado back in March. 5.3 V8. I did an oil change at that time. Mobil1 Full Synthetic HM 5W/30 and a bottle of Auto-Rx.

I just did an oil change in October. I had about 5k on the OCI. No signs of oil usage/consumption. My current fill is Valvoline R&P 5W/30. I also added a bottle of LiquiMoly Hydraulic Lifter additive, just because I had it and wanted to use it up. The vehicle is usually short tripped here in town; about 700 miles per month. This month, the vehicle did see one 600 mile round trip. In any event, the vehicle just used one and a half quarts of oil in about 1900 miles.

Wondering what I can attribute the oil usage to? Change of oil brand? Auto-Rx or Valvoline did some cleaning? I will have to monitor this closely.

You will get alot of good info here. This is just one idea.
Based on the age and miles, don't overlook valve stem seals as a possible cause.

They only cost about 30 bucks but are a pain to replace (must remove each valve sping). As a matter of fact, you would want to replace the springs at the same time due to age. I know a guy that says broken springs kill more LS engines than anything else, even the ones well maintained.
 
I'd go back to the Mobil1 5w-30 HM (since you mentioned no usage/consumption with that oil) and stop with the additives for 2 changes. You need to establish a baseline, and unfortunately...you still don't have one yet.

Agreed! I have two 5qt jugs of Mibil1 HM full synthetic in the garage. Will switch back to that next OCI. Will also change out the PCV valve if it has one.

The V R&P may have; A. unstuck something in the rings that hasn't fully dissolved allowing oil to get past the rings, not seating right. B. I have noticed in the 2 runs I did in my Element, in both runs after about 3k miles it would burn. Changed w fresh oil, zero consumption until ~3k. C. It may have cleaned up something in the motor that some sludge was sealing allowing the oil to leak past a seal. Or D. the motor doesn't like the oil and it just burns it. Has happened in motors before, sometimes one oil will use more than others in the same motor. Or E. the PCV could have gone bad.
If you are wanting to clean the motor keep running the V R&P for at least a few more runs, >4, and keep an eye on it. I would also keep the runs short at 3k miles /oci.

The ol' thicker oil trick, that never fixes anything.

You guys know, these engines with cylinder deactivation technology eat cams and lifters right? This issue is all over the internet slash world. Moral is don't buy any of these Chevy or GM vehicles. Better git rid of yours quick before you are hit with a $12,000 repair bill like we had to digest. First comes oil drinkers then a new engine.

DFM/AFM didn’t come out until 07’. you hear plenty of the failures but not the other millions of vehicles that continue to go down the road with dfm/afm working as intended. i’m not a fan of it but i do believe it is blown a bit out of proportion.

a gen III LS motor is about as dependable and bulletproof as you can get in light duty modern gasoline power.

Good catch on the year breakdown. Didn't know when they started with this nonsense LOL.
 
Active Fuel Management wasn’t introduced until 2007; so I am good there.

Can someone post a picture or part number for the updated PCV valve/orifice?
