2000 monte carlo transmission problem

I bought this car today for a project. It is a one owner 100000 mile car with a 3.4 4 speed auto.. The car was a filthy mess. Cleaned up nice. I'll post pics tomorrow. There are a few things i need to fix .Blower motor resister. A/c recharge. drivers window switch.
The most serious is that overdrive is not working . I think it did for a bit on the ride home , but never had it over 60 mph. It has thrown a code of shift solenoid(at least that is what the previous owner told me). He said that a mechanic buddy got it to shift for a bit manually , but it failed after they took it off the scan tool. I have also heard that the spline shaft on over drive strips.
Which sounds most likely and how expensive is the fix.
Possibly a b-g flush might clean up the solenoid?

common problem. although more commonly they stayed engaged at idle and stalled the car. I think its easy... but not sure

How did the previous owner drive? If they drove like a lead-foot maniac on the highway, it's possible the 4th gear input shaft is worn smooth.

Overdrive should engage at light throttle anytime over 48 mph. If it only does two shifts, start thinking about dropping the subframe to replace that 4th gear input shaft. Might want to do the solenoids while in there since the valve body has to come off anyhow.

The 4T65E of this vintage had wet noodle durability, rebuild time with upgraded parts.
Don't waste your time and money fiddling around trying to fix one with a 100K on it, its money out the window.

I agree, I got 198k out of my 4T65E-HD and everyone I "interviewed" for a rebuild was very impressed when asked about the mileage.
