2000 Ford Explorer 2WD SOHC 4.0L XLT w/Leather

Not the most comfortable driving position even with power seats, but this is by far the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned (2 Honda's, 1 Nissan, 1 Plymouth, 1 Dodge, 1 Chevy, 1 Chrysler) In 115K (i have owned it since new) I have had to replace the thermostat. Thats it.

Maintenance includes OCI of 3-4K with MC filter. Just replaced the funky PCV for the first time this year. Transmission filter changed twice. Fuel filter changed twice. Rear diff just changed for the first time. Coolant flushed twice. Gone through just one set of brakes.

I drive it pretty easily and average 19-22 MPG. Usually right at 20 MPG with 80-90% hwy miles.

It still looks pretty good although the styling is getting a tad old. She is now used primarily as a backup car and has been the family hauler since I have been saving up to get the AC fixed in the Town&Country which is in the shop right now.

Barkleymut, thanks for the info on your 00 Explorer.
I also have one; mine's an 00 2-dr Sport, with the 4.0 OHV engine and automatic, and 112,000 miles. I like the power seats in mine, especially the adjustable lumbar support since I have back problems.

Mine has been super dependable too, with only a transmission shifting 'flare' that showed up at about 40,000 miles. I fixed that with a simple Ford modification and shift kit for under $300, no problems since.

Over the years I've added suspension upgrades, custom wheels and tires, exhaust, etc, to make it handle and sound better. It too averages about 20 MPG, uses no oil and runs like a top. The better half puts about 300 miles on it weekly. This Explorer is one of the better vehicles we've owned, with enough space to haul stuff but yet small enough to park easily and manuver in traffic.
It makes a great daily driver and grocery getter, with decent fuel economy for it's size.....
