I have about 147,000 and During cold temps (30degrees or lower)I have lifter ticking for about 3 minutes on cold start ups. During the summer months I never hear it during cold start up. I been using Valvoline in all my GM Cars, I was thinking of going Pennzoil since it has moly that can help valve train chatter. I tried some Gunk Valve medic additive and it did not help. What do you recommend?

Its the internal ticking time bomb that sits inside all of GM vehicles from that era that you are hearing....lol

Im from that area and still have alot of family up there, I always describe the area to people as being close to the Mass/NH border, so your sig. got my attention. lol

If you have done regular oil changes then gunk shouldn't be an issue with your engine and don't buy into the additive advice , some on here thrive on it . It's getting old and a few miles on it so having a bit of lifter noise is pretty normal for GM's over time . A change to a different type of oil may help or you could have the lifters adjusted . Used to take the nut down till the noise stopped then another 3/4 to 1 full turn and they were reset . Unless the actual hydrolic lifter is going bad this is usually you best bet to solve lifter noise but you do them all at this point , the other will be needing adjustment too .
Used to do it all the time back in my day , oil spashing on the exhaust manifolds and smoke filling the air . It's a bit messy job

Thought $4 of MMO might be a cheap easy way to test but your right, tear that engine engine down to see whats really going on!
Before going after the lifters, are you certain that this sound is not an: exhaust manifold leak (ticks when cold), piston slap (slightly louder, but only when cold), or coil insulator going bad (spark going to ground makes a ticking sound)....
I would get a stethoscope and verify the source of this sound before trying anything else...

Leakyseals , the OP already said he tried an additive . While for some mechanic in a bottle/can seems to be the answer in reality sometimes you actually have to do a repair to really fix it . Sure , worth a try but I don't put much faith in it if the vehical has been maintained .

Lifters wear over time and get extra clearance. Just try a high mileage oil like maxlife and see what happens.

Switch to a 10w30 or 10w40 high mileage motor oil
Every winter, Just got tired of it. I been using white bottle valvoline 5w30,with PF52 AC Delco filter and Now I tried Wix filter. I get about the same results.
Also It only happens when the truck is cold started during cold temps,when the car sits about a Day.I tried MMO 1 quart and 4 quarts of 10w30,Noticed on the oil change it was really black and the oil felt like water.I was thinking of trying different oil for the next change. I don't want to go thicker due to the temperatures we get in chicago, 30 to 10 degrees. Someone mention to me about lucas but after reading on the forums how it really is not good.Today I drove it and It was ticking and clicking,and after 3 minutes it was quiet.

LOL I heard that from a few mechanics. My impala SS has much more miles than this truck and it does not make one click or tick. It idles quiet...

Im not a big fan of mobil 1 in the chevy and the escalade, It started leaks on the impala, So i changed it and went back conventional. I did not want to play the game of changing seals and gaskets =)

Interesting part about this, From a cold start within 5-10 seconds it starts chattering. I wait about 3 min then it goes quiet. I will look at the manifold gaskets tommorow and check the oil again,It was clean about a week about last time i check.
