2000 Chevy S10 Transmission change

My father has a 2000 Chevy S-10 RWD 4.3L V6. It was his fathers before he had wrecked the truck and the transmission may have been rebuilt, not 100% sure on that. It was done 2 years ago. Anyhow the truck has 99,000 miles on it and he'd like to do an ATF change on in it.

What ATF dos you recommend?
Where can we get a transmission filter for it?
How would you recommend doing the change? Is it just a drop pan?

1st question: Dexron VI
2nd: Advance, Autozone, Napa, Pepboys, checkers, pretty much any autoparts store should carry it.
3rd: With that number of miles on a reman tanny, just drop the pan.

I'll go a little further and suggest getting a drain plug put on that pan to or else continue to drop it to facilitate 30K mile drain/refill regime. The key to longevity on these is keeping the ATF fresh and clean. AFAIK my suburban has the same transmission as yours does, and I am still going like new with nearly 200,000 miles on mine.

The in pan filter is nothing more than felt-like cloth with a pickup tube. doesn't filter out much but larger items. Keep the fluid clean and fresh and the filter changes can be kept at minimum

ATF is cheap, as you already know rebuilds and other work are not.

Any specific Dex-VI you guys recommend?

I know the Valvoline Full Synthetic I just did a change in my mothers Rendezvous is great, but do you guys recommend anything specific for this truck?

Also how many quarts will we need for this drop pan change?

I use Castrol Dex-VI available just about anywhere and it works just fine, but your Valvoline Full Synthetic would work just as well. These aren't picky transmissions.

I have an aftermarket trans cooler on mine and I needed 7 quarts, so you'll probably need about 6. But you could pick up an extra just in case, it never hurts to have one laying around in case you need to top off.
