2000 Camry OCI

I just bought this 2000 Toyota Camry 2.2L, I changed the valve cover gasket and it's very clean inside. Supposedly this is included in Toyota's sludge engine list.

I just changed the oil at 195k miles with Chevron Supreme HM 5w30 and a Fram Ultra.

The next 3 oil changes will be with the good old Pennzoil Ultra and a Fram Ultra.

Since this is part of Toyota's Sludger days, I don't want to squeeze out every last drop from the oil, I'd like it to be pretty reasonable. How long should I go on each oil change?

Im thinking 5,000 on the current Chevron Supreme and 7,500 on the Pennzoil Ultra.

I drive about 17,000 miles per year, have some traffic in the morning and some city driving but plenty of highway. It is not short tripped whatsoever. I mostly drive it pretty easy, and every once in a while wind it out.

I would do 2 OCI's a year with synthetic oil and Fram Ultra(reuse for 2 OCI's).

OCI on time will be easier to remember, one in Fall and the other in Spring.

Great plan already suggested here. I have a 98 Camry that was basically a barn find. My lady's grandma's car that was perfectly over maintained. It runs great, had timing belt changed at 63k miles, new battery, and it was spotless.

I like Pennzoil Ultra and Platinum plus a Fram Ultra with the twice a year plan

But really Valvoline, Castrol, Mobil 1, Supertech all have very good oils to choose from

I hope your car is as good as the one my lady and I have. These cars were and still are really well made cars.

With doing shorter OCIs, a Fram Ultra filter is un-necessary. Fram Ultras are good for up to 15K.

If you do 10K OCIs on PPU, a Fram Ultra would benefit you.

My 99 Camry has around 130K on the clock, check out my thread. I posted pics under the valve cover. I use whatever dino is on sale 5w30 at 3K since it's a short tripper only.

I'd rather do oil changes based on mileage and not time.

I know the Fram Ultra is up to the task of 15k easily, but it's a small filter. Is it still up to the task?

Toyota recommends 5k with dino, when you use synthetic you can easily double the mileage to 10k. Your daily drivings are not short trips, so 10k with synthetic is easy.

Since your yearly mileage is less than 20k, 6 months OCI at around 8-9k is easy with any name brand synthetic.

Yeah, maybe when I switch to the Pennzoil Ultra from my stash I'll take it to 10,000 and do a used oil analysis of it to see how it did.

+3. I change mine every October and April and both my Toys would accumulate at least 5k miles in that time frame.

In the past, oil filters are usually empty on my car (my previous 2.2L Camry too) after I drain the oil from the pan. I would take it off to check anyways.

The Trailblazer I just changed the oil but left the filter alone because the car has a 7 quart sump.

We have a 1997 Camry 4-Banger, yes, it is a very small oil filter.

There is an extended length oil filter! In PureOne's, it's a PL14477, the regular length is a PL14476. Cross-Reference it.

Get the Extended Length version

On my previous 2000 Camry 2.2 automatic I was running Mobil high mileage at 5k miles. Replacing filter at each change. I was using regular filters, like fram or stp. Yes that engine had the sludge warning. Car was in family since new so I remember my dad getting contacted about it. He was very good about maintenance so it didn't seem to have sludge. I would occasionally run a flush before oil changes. Sold it with 307k miles original engine, transmission, never even blew head gasket or anything. Very good car. I should've kept it.

Here is an idea for once a year OCI's....both oil and filter.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30....and a Fram Ultra filter.

Since most of your driving is highway, once a year OCI at 15K+ should save you time and $$$, and use both oil and filter to their maximum.

Fram has a little footnote for the Ultra that says.Follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle owner's manual.I am sure the filter will go 15K. But if your owner's manual says 5K and it fails at 15K are you going to be SOL??
