I am somewhat or totally confused as to the reason for the use of ashless 2-stroke oils in outboards vs. ashers in air cooled 2-stroke engines. What is the reason?

Thanks for the link. It was very informative.

To summarize: Detergent 2-stroke oil is required at either end of the cylinder temperature range, thus the use in the air-cooled engines. Heavy oil with no detergent works well at continuous moderate cylinder temperatures seen in outboards, but doesn't burn well at lesser throttle angles.

How are the synthetic oils designed for various cylinder temperatures?

wiley, thanks for the link, a good read. People that fly their engines might get a little more involved in how this work. Bike racers are hard on oil and have favorites, but they may rebuild things too quickly to know how long thinks might last. Once people understand the two types of 2-stroke oil, making a better choice is easy. I have a favorite for my yard tools, Red Line but there are lots of other good oils, too.
