I think you'll see that California is the highest of the 48 and all most 40 cents a gallon more than the cheapest states.
My sister in law who lives in San Diego is paying over 50 cents a gallon more than I am.
Back on topic, Sounds like piston Slap for the orginal poster. If it's only start up and for 30 secs. Or your oil is draining down and your getting some time before it pumps up.
Filter problem? Never heard of one with a Cartridge...

San Diego's gasoline supply is delivered via a high-pressure pipeline from the Industrial Basin to the North (read: L.A.).
The Kinder Morgan pipeline company controls bulk fuel delivery to two depots in San Diego -- one in the northern part of the county, and a larger one in central part, in the city of San Diego proper. Fuels are stored in two separate tanks (one for regular and one for premium) on a common basis, so any refiner sending gas down the pipeline gets their product mixed with everyone else's.
When distributed via truck to gas stations, only the additive packages placed in the tanker before leaving the depot distinguishes the gasolines. The base "stock", if you will, is identical for each octane rating. Brand loyalty means only additive loyalty here.
The reason gas is so expensive is that there is only one outfit that delivers fuel from the refineries in the Basin -- Kinder Morgan. They're the only ballgame in town, and they know it. Add to that the lack of independent retailers (there are very few left indeed here), and the result is that gasoline pricing is easily manipulated.
At a Chevron near my house today, premium was $2.969 a gallon, with mid-grade (pump blended) and regular about a dime less each.

I listened to another 2004 Sunfire and it did the exact same thing - but worse because its owner used Conventional oil (NEGLECT!!!).
I guess this must be "normal." The dealer didn't notice anything out of the ordinary - but then again, would they?
Does Piston Slap show up on used oil analysis? I'll run this oil (GC Gold) for a long OCI (10k or so) and do a used oil analysis.

OK, I don't want to get all nit picky about this, but I did not say that current california gas prices are lower than the rest of the country. I know that they are more. The prices in some parts of California may be 40 cents more, but that site is listing some of the highest gas prices in California. Cities like Sacremento and even LA have lower prices.
In addition, I agree that as time goes on the price difference between Cali and the rest of the country continues to diverge, it was just that for a while the prices were similar and in some instances California's prices were lower. Historically, a 30-40 cent difference between California and the rest of the country is actually pretty low. Look at Houston $2.47 and Oakland $2.61. That is only a 14 cent difference. In the past it would have been closer to a 70-80 cents.
BTW I was in Salt Lake City (Eagle Mountain/ Traverse Mountain) yesterday and the prices were higher than $2.21.
Did you look at their historical average tools? Make a chart that compares California with the national average price. You will see the cross-over that I described in my previous post that happened in December.
$2.21?!?!?! 91 Octane just hit $2.99 yesterday here where I live. That means 87 octane is $2.79!
My friend in Iowa reports $2.49 for 89 octane.
What is funny is - if get off a freeway - the gasoline stations by the freeway are usually +.20 cents/gal more expensive than the ones a mile or so down the road from the freeway. Talk about making money or what?

And I filled up my truck Tuesday (and the gas is the same price today) for $2.18...

I just got home and the gas is the same price at every station I saw except the Chevron (anybody buying gas there for $2.29 love to spend $$)

I was just showing that even though the gas prices link showed $2.21 then Winston said that was not true here, I just wanted to show that he was correct, it's lower than $2.21.
Trust me, we pay higher for some stuff that CA pays less. But gas is not one of those items..
How much is gas from a normal station like Arco (I know that name from when I go visit my SIL, they have lower priced gas) for the gas you need?

Well, My SIL and BIL use Arco in their Honda Element, Dodge Hemi truck and his V10 powered Ford work truck and they have never had any bad things happen.
Everytime I'm down there, I fill up in Vegas (from her to Vegas on a tank), Fill up in Victorville and then fill up in Victorville on the way back. That allows me to make it to St George, UT for the next fill up.
Theres a Arco station on the right side just before Victorville.. (Apple Valley?) then you go up a hill if I remember correctly..
I'd get some cash or use your ATM (I think they only take cash or debit cards?) and try them.
18 cents a gallon is ALOT! Use their gas and go buy a gallon of FP and use it. You'd be better off both $$ and cleanness of FI system.
