1st oil change, OLM or miles?

If I had followed my maintenance minder on my '08 Honda, I would have done my first oil change at 9,706 miles. Instead, I changed the factory fill at about 4k, replaced with Castrol GTX and ran that until the OLM indicated it was oil change time.
Now my Honda's got Mobil 1 5w-20 and I'm going to do an oil analysis at about 7,500 miles to see what's up. My goal is to get about 10k out of the oil (which is basically what the OLM is suggesting).

I have to admit I too would change it sooner even if the manual said to go to 5K or use the OLM on the 1st change. Just me and how I have always done it. I don't buy into benefits of these so called "break in oils" if they truly even exist. I am easy on an engine for the 1st 500 miles and then it is driven normal. By 1500 miles it is as broken in as it is going to get and I want that oil full of particles out of there asap.
I always change my factory oil, or the oil I put in after I rebuild an engine, betwen 1000-1500. You don't need to go 5K+ to break an engine in. I then run that oil to 5K. I then swap over to synthetic and do my OC's every 5K. If I keep it out of warranty I go to 10K OC's witha filter swap and top off at 5K.
The 1st change for me at that 1000-1500 mark is "usually" conventional oil although I have started out with synthetic from the get go in engines I built and I have also started out with synthetic at that 1st change as well. Really it is what you want.
On my current vehicle I just did the 1st OC today. Only had 922 miles but I planned on being over 1000 when I made the appt. Bad weather hit and I didn't drive as much. Used Castrol GTX. At 5K I will swap to Royal Purple and it will be all I run from that point on.

I guess everyone is different and some engines respond differently to some oils better than others.
For some reason there is a huge anti RP bias on this site. They make great fluids all around including oil. I have never had a problem with it and other than here you never hear anything but positive about it.
This site is clearly pro certain other brands and I believe RP is trashed to pump them up by those who want only their brand to be popular. Very little factual basis for the bad rep it gets here as well. I don't have an actual number but I guarantee a lot of the RP bashing here is done by people that heard from this or that vocal member it is bad so they just take that as gospel.
Yes, a few have had shearing or bad analysis reports BUT so has EVERY OTHER brand mentioned here as well. In those instances it is just passed off as it didn't perform well in that engine but it is still a good oil. When RP arises it is just junk.

I will certainly agree with that statement. Some say one uoa does not tell the story, do another uoa on the same oil and see if improves some. If not try another brand or go back to what was working before you swapped.
