1998 Ranger 2.3L

I've had my '98 Ranger for three years and have put roughly 30,000 miles on it while using Castrol Syntec Blend (10w-30). Having read here about the relatively small amounts of synthetic in most blends (and I don't know how Syntec really grades out with regards to this), I was thinking of blending my own. Currently, I have about a case and a half of 10w30 Syntec Blend, so I'll be using that as my "base oil." However, I use Mobil 1 (5w30) on my other vehicle and I always have a half quart left over (4.5 qt oil change). Thus, I'm thinking of using 4 qts. of Syntec Blend and the left-over half-quart of Mobil 1 5w30 (the Ranger takes 4.5 qts too). Is there any problems with blending cross-brands? What about the difference in weights? Considering it is a relatively small amout of true synthetic I'm adding, I myself don't feel like those are problems.

Any thoughts?

If you use a half-quart betwen OCIs (hypothetical), just save the Mobil 1 for topping-off half-way thru your OCI. If your vehicle uses no oil between OCIs, then use the Mobil 1 elsewhere -- top-off with Castrol Syntec & count your blessings. Seen too many instances where a non-user became a drinker after mixing or changing brands.

To give you an idea of my mixology experience, try running 1 quart Redline 20w50 with 1 quart Valvoline 10w40 Durablend with 1 1/2 quarts Castrol 10w30 Start-Up, and 1 1/2 quarts Valvoline 15w40 Premium Blue HDEO oil.

That's the current concoction in that inlaw's car right now, and it STILL is using the oil!!! But, it still runs and fires up great, just a little valve train noise on start up, that's it.

Why not just use Motorcraft 5w30? HTHS of 3.2. Good used oil analysis.

That there Syntec Blend is good stuff. No need to mix with another synthetic.

I had an 88 Ranger once apon a time, I would use four quarts of Castrol GTX 10w30 with one quart of Castrol Syntec 5w-50. That motor ran like it should.

I couldn't afford Syntec Blend for all five quarts so I made my own Syntec blend. But if one is starting with Syntec Blend you will be alright.

Go ahead with your plan and when your existing stock is depleted,use Motorcraft oil (now a blend)and filter.
