1997 VW 80K oil leak

Hey people my wifes 97 jetta 2.0L non turbo has developed an oil leak from the transmission pan skid plate, oil not atf. Im just courious when changing oil has anyone got oil on the plate itself from doing an oil change? Im pretty certain its not the rear main seal. The car has been sitting for the last two weeks. Thanks.

Rear seals on the older Vw's arent to common. More than likely it is the transmission pan. Many Vw's use almost an engine oil looking fluid for the transmission. Its possible to get oil in that area from an oil change but it would take some serious spillage. Being that its a 1997 model it shouldnt have a dipstick for the transmission so its gonna be hard to tell which fluid is in it unless you either drop the pan or take the fill cap off and check that way.
