you can use the G-05 in the 97, zerex g05 is the same stuff as the motorcraft gold.

but any old green style is great.

I just flushed a 3.0 in a '98 Ranger and refilled with a store brand Peak all makes/models equivalent and I'm sure it will be fine. I used G-05 in an '04 low mileage 3.0 Ranger but I'm not sure there's any reason to spend double the money other than I wanted to keep the '04 "all factory like" for kicks.

I also had to clear a stuffed up reservoir hose and replace the Motorcraft radiator cap, to solve an overheating/coolant leaking problem so for a few extra bucks/minutes you could do those as well. You may also want to pull the heater core hoses and flush the heater core as they can get clogged up.

I bought a new 97 Explorer with the same SOHC engine you have. Sold it at 200k...never a [censored] issue with it. I drained radiator and filled every fall with plain old yellow prestone at 60/40 mix with distilled water. Original radiator and pump. Changed the upper n lower hoses at 120k.

that's what I recommend.
