It's coolant maintenance time and I am inclined to do a dex-cool flush. No leaks in the cooling system. Coolant is full when I pull of the radiator cap when cold. I do not have the expertise to do a complete flush and get the dex-cool completely out, and this vehicle is limited use (2500 mi/yr). For all you BITOG coolant experts, what is a good decent price brand dex cool type coolant, and if you think I am crazy for not removing the dex, feel free to let me know. Just let me know what your opinion is so I can get started on it. again, its a 1996 GMC Yukon. Thanks----

I've got a '97 2500 with the Vortex 5.7 and had trouble with the intake manifold gaskets leaking at the 7 year and 66666 mile point (how are those numbers for a unlikely coincidence?).
When I flushed it previously, I just installed the Prestone flush and fill kit, and ran it with a garden hose until all the fluid coming out was clear. It wasn't difficult, but I don't have the facilities to do that now, so I just use a few drain and fills with distilled water. Then drain a last time, and add pure antifreeze. With the fluids that are left in the system, it works out to around a 50% mix.
I guess I'm a little nuts because I still haven't switched from Dexcool. Maybe I want to demonstrate how quickly I can replace the IMGs now that I'm an "expert". To answer your original question, I use Wallmart Prestone Dexcool and distilled water. I think I'll subscribe to the thread to see how big of a mistake that is.

My blazers IMG went at 8 yr mark with 175k miles on it. i have read several times that it is not the dexcool that causes the gaskets to fail, it is the dexcool breaking down and becoming corrosive to the gasket. I dont know if it is true or not, just read it many times. If you want to talk your self into getting the dex cool out of there, do a google search of dex cool and gm engines and IMG's failing. It wont take long to set your mind at ease that there is a better product out there. Pretty scarry. GO-5 made by Zerex is what i believe most are recommending. If you do switch, make sure you flush the system well becuase the two are not compatable. Good luck with your maintenance. I own three chevys , 93 pickup, 99 suburban, and 01 blazer and unfortionally i seem to be under them a lot. I do all my own maintenance and lately it has been driving me nuts.

I read that in my service manual also. I'm pretty sure that is a sealant to try and cope with the IMG problems. I've never used it.
