That car has 180,000+ miles on it. The book shows 10w30 (best all around according to the book) from -4 to 104 F and 15w40 from about 0 to off the chart, but that book is from 1996 a lot has changed in oil. What weight would you use with the turbo?

In a way it depends on the oil (as you state).

15W-40 conventional will make the engine seem sluggish relative to Xw-30. 15w40 synthetic will too, but not so much.

10W-30 synthetic will work OK.

5W-40 is OK.

Best? In that engine? A good 0W-30. I've been trying all different viscosities for 12+ years in my 1996 850. 0w30 is the smoothest, quietest longest lasting.

I would agree with Pablo. A 0w30 or 5w30 will work great!!

Any quality synthetic oil will work fine. For price and performance I am a fan of Pennzoil Platnium.

With that many miles it probably burns some oil, although Volvo's also seem to have valve stem seal problems. If the 30 weight dissapears too quickly, try AutoRX and the Rotella 5W-40.

I have a 98 Volvo S70 T5. I've been running 10/30 Mobil 1 in the summer and Mobil 1 5w30 in the winter months. The 10/30 will be a quart down after 5,000 miles, but in the winter, the 5w30 will use more oil. I think next year I'm going to run Mobil 1 10w30 all year long. I change oil twice a year..about 5,000 miles.

In a '96 turbo, run Rotella T Synthetic 5w40.

Capacity on the turbo is 5.6 quarts.
Six quarts won't hurt a thing.

I'm running AMSOIL Signature Series 0w30. Normal interval 10K or so. This one 15K, headed for 18 months.

Last time I filled a Volvo n/a I-5, I dumped in 6q and it was a lil high. I think you can do a change safely w/6q on-hand. The only otc 10w30 I'd use in your car/climate is PP or SynPower. 5w-40 is too thick for my tastes at 0f.

Some oils that fall in this vehicle's weight range are diesel/gas oils, like rotella. These oils are mainly diesel oils, so what are their pros and cons in a gas engine? Every time I think of turbos, I think of high heat. I would think a diesel oil would be designed for this since most new diesels have turbos. Not that I think I can't run a 0w30, I just would like to know more about running diesel oils in gas engines. Thanks again.

RTS is an GIII oil with numerous SOTA diesel approvals. While marketed to the diesel user, it is also API-SM. It is also the perfect vis for the I-5 turbo used in the 850s. The pre '99 I-5s had a ring pack design that was prone to consume many 30 weights.

Get out of the thinking that "diesel" oils are just for diesels. Some are just excellent universal oils, period.
