Hi all,

I am planning to either flush or drain & fill the coolant. I am wondering what color should I use (red or green) for Deville 1976 since the coolant seems brownish and I did not think it has been flushed before.

A flush would be a good idea. Replace with the lowest cost standard green coolant. 29-3019-4 if you shop at Canadian Tire.

"Red" and "Green" mean nothing.

DO NOT use DexCool. That also, by implication, means don't use Prestone All Makes/All Models since its a DexCool clone. My choice would be a conventional inorganic technology coolant (most parts-store "house brands" still come in that flavor- its the old formula that was usually some shade of green.)

Another option that is generally considered pretty safe for old cooling systems is G-05. Its got silicates to protect multimple metals quickly, and does not use 2EHA like DexCool.

Some people also recommend Peak Global Lifetime, but I've never personally used it. I have used G-05 in 3 older vehicles with good results.

A flush would be a good idea. I would use standard green for it. Not the all makes stuff. Zerex still makes old school green coolant.

Prestone or ST all makes all models, the old fashioned green stuff (or equivalent) should do you fine for that vintage.

DO NOT USE A LONG LIFE COOLANT IN THAT CAR!!!! NO Prestone ALL MAKES ALL MODELS,Dexcool etc. Must only use a Silicated old school green coolant. The long life coolants will eat the solder out of the heater core and Radiator.

In fact My warranty is voided if you use a LL coolant in a Copper Rad or heater we built.

By the way, can I also use Toyota coolant long life premix 50/50 since I have few of them?

Zerex makes a plain jane green old time fluid. U can get it by the case on amazon. Cut and paste this in at Amazon. Zerex ZXRU1-6PK Original Green Ready-to-Use Antifreeze/Coolant - 1 Gallon, (Case of 6)

Will AC Delco still have a classic green here? Check the product named Celsius, or better yet, check for Texaco or Havoline original green at Partsource or another parts store.

Toyota Red and Toyota Pink are both non-silicate coolants, so they will not protect your cooling system properly.

You have to find the coolant that actually is green, and states that it has silicates. Green antifreeze made for Japanese cars is non-silicate, so don't use that either.

It should still be available there. I don't have the Canadian part #, but the US part # is 12378560 for a gallon. GM refers to it as "traditional coolant" in the catalog, and as "antifreeze/coolant - ethelyene glycol base" on the bottle itself. If in doubt, it will say on the back label "DO NOT MIX WITH DEXCOOL" or something to that effect.

I keep at least a case in stock...we still use it often enough to justify keeping it on hand.

Rotella ELC is an OAT that has plenty of molybdate to protect your brass, lead, and copper, with no silicate or 2HEA. I have been using it in older cars with no issues. Higher service life and oxidation state than green.
