I own a 1970 280 SEL MBenz(108.019) and was wondering if anyone knew which type of coolant/antifreeze is best for this radiator/engine. I also own a 1979 300SD Mbenz diesel. Should I be using low silicate formulas? Is there a coolant that protects both the copper radiator and the aluminum engine head?

The 1979 should use G-05. I believe that older models are allowed to use this coolant also. My 1976 and 1980 240D as well as the 1982 300 D (turbo, OM617.952 engine vs the OM 617.950 in your SD) both said in the manuals to use Mercedes-Benz coolant, which is G-05.

For a car with a copper radiator and aluminum head I would recommend the old fashioned green silicated antifreeze. It is best to protect the soldered joints. G-05 is a good second choice.

Both G-05 and Green provide some protection for copper-brass and aluminum. Since you also have a diesel you probably want G-05 since it is nitrited. One reason that Zerex recommends G-05 for the older Mercedes and not Green is because Mercedes call for phosphate free, which wouldn't matter if you aren't using hard water. Probably simplest to use G-05 for both.
