Oil for a 1969 Nova with a 502 Big Block that runs 12.4 quarter with full interior and radio, and drives on the street with "Cheater Slicks" and it can do that? (Roll cage too. Exhaust sounds like a loud Harley. Thats why i like it too, lol.) What Oil?

"Silver Frost Flake Metallic" paint color, with two Black racing stripes running longways over hood and roof and trunk. Its a sweet ride. Built froma shell! 502 Big Block crate motor from GM, man that motor looks Mean.

Recommend me up an OIL! Ill pass it on to the owner.

Deal. Im emailing my uncle now.

Trust me, this makes that Riviera look like a hooptie.

Alright!

If this is a brand-new engine from GM, it is most likely a roller motor, so extra-high ZN/P isn't a big concern - it should be fine on API SM/SN oils.

As for viscosity, you're going to hear a lot on this. I'm pretty sure GM recommends the use of 20W-50 (yes, 20W-50) in it's high-performance crate motors.

I don't think you need to go that thick, but it depends on the use this beast will see - If it's mostly mild street use and cruising, I'd say a 10W-30 should be good. But if this car will be raced fairly frequestly, a 15w40 HDEO or 20W-50 race oil wouldn't be out of the question.

.....and now that I think of it, hounddog is right - that is kinds slow for a BB Nova on slicks - it should be capable of 11's with ease.

Back in 1968/69, 427 Nova conversions would run mid-to-low 12's with the poor cheater slicks of the day (usually 7-inchers).

For now, all i could find was this ugly, horrible car.

Its UGLY!!

Unc's car has the "Narrow Rear End" which is super cool. Everyone tells him, and he knows, he could "Make it go faster." All he saus is "So? I have the leather Interior and the Radio in it and i drive it on the street too. Its fast enough at 12.4." !!!

That paint job is soo ugly.. Picture the Orange as Silver, and the White stripes as Red.. and those ugly wheels NOT on it. Phew, thats a bad lookin Nova. Not in a good way.

"12.4 second quarter at 109." USED to be faster than older Lambos, now the performance Lambos and Ferraris do that.

I used to have a pic of that car, qith the rear end squatting down as it jumps off the line.. of course, the front tires are a little smaller. You can really see the nose dive UP coming off the line.

That may have been on a Hot summer day (?) when it was still being ironed out. I havent talked to him in some years. At least 3.

I put the request in for the pics and info addyguy. i think about this car a lot, its pretty sweet.

Last month he was talking about a Weld that failed. He made it himself, he owns a Welding business....... The car gets driven every weekend, and you know that car is around. its rumbly and throaty, have heard few cars that loud, and only SOME deeper.

Hounddog is right, That 12.4/109 is DOG slow. Back to the pits with it. A street 350 mouse with a TH350 can run those numbers in a Nova.
-
Shouldnt be harsh, since I never seen it run, so maybe it just need more tire ....

You are on to something.

When i get in touch with mu Uncle, Im gonna ask him.. "WHY So Slow! Your Nova is getting -torn apart- on the Oil board."

It is possible it was testing out some transmission thing. He has a Hurst racing shifter, maybe its screwed up - ?

Narrow rear-end for wider tires, racing shifter.. Something is wrong. Maybe even e quoted numbers. OR that was the first run.......... ?

EDIT: That Orange Nova is *****. The "Rolling Shell" that was re-painted and built up looks MORE like this one

Oh, trust me. The ACTUAL 69 Nova, with "QQ" Historic plates from NJ, and the "Silver Frost Flake Metallic" Paint is comin. Just need to wait for them to be e-mailed.. hopefully it doesnt take forever!

Id have snapped some shows of it, but every time i ran outside to snap a photo (you can hear the car) it was already down the block.

Im going to be sure to ask why it was so slow at 12.4/109, since its unanimous that is waaay slower than it should be and it almost sounds as if something is wrong with the car!!

If i can get the pic of it exhibiting "Rear-end squat" at Engishtown, ill be proud of myself.

Right now, im waiting on the pics. I hope they come, and dont "never come."

EDIT: Could it be the Hurst Racing shifter is screwed up?

Ouch. Tough crowd.

Anyways, I have to agree. It's a DOG! But it's a cool looking and sounding dog. The trap speed is slow, against the ET it shows good traction and poor HP.

It's really typical of "resto-rodding", as anyone can put one together from pieces but few can tune them to really run!

I was able to get my 1970 nova down to a 14.9 with a 350/headers/cam and large 2 barrel!!!

something aint right with this 502 setup for sure!

OK Mr. Tron.....

Working on those pics. No word yet.

Kind of a sad day. And here i am thinking the 502 with a Hurst and Narrow rear-emd (Pics!!! Im working on it!! Its not up to me!!) Was fast at 12.4 @ 109.

If i find out it ever got faster than that, ill report back!

I find it amusing we're calling anything that run's 12's slow. But, I get it.

Was it his only run at the track? There could be loads of room for improvement in any area.
