1962 evinrude on auto oil

When i was a teenager my buds dad had an evinrude outboard on a 16 foot boat.Cant remember the h.p. I know it was a v4.The only oil he ever mixed in his 6 gallon fuel tanks was half a quart (50-1)of chevron 30 weight auto oil. in the cardboard cans. This boat lasted 35 seasons.I would not recomend this type of mix in todays high tech efi lol.

I remember my Dad using Braygo (in the can) 2 cycle oil in his 1967 6hp Johnson trolling motor when I was a little boy. Also the manual stated that you can use SAE 30wt oil in an emergency. However, it did warn of the ash and only if nothing else was available.

If memory serves, [censored] it's been a long time since I've worked on those, a 62 V4 would be 75 HP.

I never knew anyone to use 4 stroke oil on them but as loose as those engines were I guess it wouldn't kill it if it wasn't idled a lot.

I have a 1956 Johnson and on the gas tank it says to use 30 weight motor oil. Ratio is 24:1. That engine runs like a sewing machine, but it smokes a lot. How the times have changed.

Well, the 30W oil of the past is actually a great 2 stroke oil. Really, not that different from today's low end 2 stroke oils. In fact, if you look carefully, you will notice that current low end two stroke oils are either 30 or 40 base viscosity.

Same here. We've got a '56 Sport-twin 9.9hp and an old Fleet-twin 18hp. I know YEARS ago we used 30wt for pre-mix on the 9.9. It smoked like a mofo. If it wasn't for the need for the ancient pressurized gas tanks on these old birds, they'd still be great engines.
