15W50 vs SAE 50

I use Mobil 1 15W50 silver cap year round. Would there be any benefits/disadvantages of using a synthetic SAE 50 during our 100F+ summers?

I`ve been seeing alot of posts praising straight grade oils and it`s got me curious about them.

As much as I like mono grade, non VII oils.......why would you need such a viscous oil? SAE 40 is max, and maybe SAE 30 in any temps in most any street car.....

What grade would you have if you used pure motor honey? I tried #50 in a lawnmower once, but dont know if you can get a synthetic #50.

A synthetic mono-grade like Redline might not be that bad in the summer. I've run straight 60wt dino in the Buick to try and get a few miles out of it after it developed a rod knock. You have to be very careful on a cold start. I would start the car and immediately put it into drive so rpms weren't too high and wait 10-15 minutes for oil pressure to start getting down to a reasonable pressure before driving. Any revs would blow the filter off. Not what you want in your daily driver unless you have 30 extra minutes a day to let the oil warm up.

It's no hotter there than it is a lot of other places. That car doesn't need anything more than a good 30 weight unless he is doing track days or pulling a big trailer up hill all day.

50Weight oil for a street grade gasoline?!?

I guess you can get yourself an older British made Jaguar or MGB that calls for 50weight oil. But then again, why should I?

Also: perhaps some older John Deere tractors may call for 50 weight monograde oil also...or cotton gin?

By majority vote it looks like it`s a grade of oil best avoided! Guess I was just a bit curious as I know absolutely nothing about single grade oils,so I thought I`d toss the ? to the experts.
