Picked up some Valvoline Premium Blue on sale. Plan to use it obviously in summer but what would be a conservatively safe low temp for cranking in a gas engine that specifies 5w/10w?

I think the temperature range on 15w40 is +4F to122F. I use 10w40 in my vehicles and maybe a handful of times every few years will have to start in temps as low as negative single digits. In Dec. 1989 the temps dropped to near -30F if I remember correctly, the engine turned over a bit slow but my car started at those temps with 10w40.

According to J300 a 15W40 oil would be tested at -20C (-4F) for cold cranking. Often the battery is the weak link here.

If I recall correctly you drive long periods of time without shutting the engine down? In that case a 15w40 would be a strong performer above freezing. And still suitable to Lower than that

Maybe it specifies 5W and 10W oils because you're in north america where 15W only are HDEO oils. Check if other grades are recommended overseas for cars that have the same engine as yours.

I have started my JD Tractor at 14-18*F with 15W40 ( Maxlife this past year), without issues or plugging it in.
I don't know which part of Mass you live in, but I live in Western MA. It's usually a bit warmer as you get towards Boston and the South Shore (Shoah).

I have to ask you guys: Why the Abuse? We love our Kia's and take care of them.......LOL

Class 8 Diesel trucks can start OK down to about 0F. Below that they need to be plugged into the block heater. We used the block heater below 32F just to take the strain off the starter and battery.

I used to use 15w40 in my diesel trucks. Would start fine down to about -30*F. Colder than that I would have to use block heater to get them to start. 5w-40 would start colder.

Our shop ran 15w40 Rotella in our fleet of Crown Vic PI's and Explorer's. The Explorer's were the "pre" ecoboost models. We never had any issues with starting.
